Ohio teacher gets 3 years in prison for sex case
PAINESVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- A former ninth-grade math teacher in Ohio has been sentenced to three years in prison for having sexual contact with a student in her classroom.
Twenty-three-year-old Maggie Laughlin of Willowick wept as she apologized at her sentencing Wednesday in Lake County Common Pleas Court. Judge Paul Mitrovich said Laughlin violated a position of trust.
Laughlin was a first-year teacher at Shore Junior High School in Mentor. She pleaded guilty in August to eight counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a juvenile. Authorities said the victim was a 15-year-old boy.
Laughlin's lawyer said Laughlin cooperated with police and acknowledged what she did.
But Assistant Prosecutor Jason Wuliger said Laughlin has not shown remorse.
Laughlin will relinquish her teaching license and have to register her address every six months for the next 25 years.
