Playhouse wraps up 60 years

HURON -- The Huron Playhouse will end its "60th Anniversary Season" series with the Tony Award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, running July 29-August 2. Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan wrote this Broadway smash hit, with music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by Dick Scanlan. Filled with frisky tap dancing flappers, dashing leading men, and a dragon-lady villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie has taken the theatre world by storm and has everyone dancing the Charleston.

Based upon the popular movie of the same title and set in the 1920s jazz-age, the charming musical tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to New York in search of a new life for herself, and the zany escapades that ensue. This high-spirited musical score includes such hits as ""Thoroughly Modern Millie, and "Jimmy" that were also in the original movie version.

Appearing in the multi-talented cast are Amanda Striph (Toledo) as Millie Dillmount; Matt Bugay (Sharon Center) as Jimmy Smith; Devan O'Mailia (Whitehouse) as Miss Dorothy Brown; Jess Aukemann (Bryon Center, Mich.) as Mr. Trevor Graydon; Heather Williams (Grand Forks, N.D.) as Muzzy Van Hosmere and Jennifer Andacht (Oak Creek, Wis.) as Mrs. Meers. The large cast also includes local actors, as well as an ensemble of adults and high school students from the area.

Veteran Playhouse director, Jim Williams (New York, N.Y.) directs this final production of the season. He directed last season's Annie. Kerry Glann (Huron), Playhouse veteran musical director and conductor, brings the score to life. J. Rex Stanforth (Milan) is designing the set; Choreographer is Kacy Christensen (New York, N.Y.); Esther Iverson (Bowling Green) is designing the costumes; Christopher Moeller (Livonia, Mich.) is lighting designer; properties mistress is Britney Koser (Huron); Todd P. Canedy (Bowling Green) is serving as technical director. Assistant directors are George Muehlhauser (Huron) and Tyler Ward (Aurora, Colo.); Christine Czerwinski (Libertyville, Ill.) is production stage manager with Patrick Simone (Stow) as assistant stage manager and serving as dance captain is Brieanna Bailey (Grand Island, N.Y.).

Ticket prices for all Huron Playhouse productions are $14 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $9 for children under 12. The curtain time is 8 p.m. nightly (Tuesday-Saturday). For reservations and further information, please contact the Huron Playhouse at 419-433-4744. The Box Office at McCormick School, 325 Ohio Street, is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
