Physicians honored at The Bellevue Hospital
Physicians at The Bellevue Hospital (TBH) were honored Tuesday, March 31, during the National Doctor's Day celebration. Physicians were invited to attend a breakfast in their honor.
"This was a way of showing our gratitude for the many hours of medical services provided to the communities we serve, 365 days a year, by our medical staff members," said Michael K. Winthrop, President and CEO of TBH. "We are grateful for the dedication and continual service of our many fine physicians."
The Bellevue Hospital's medical staff is headed by a quintet of officers for 2009, including Andrew Huddleston, D.O., president; Daniel Herring, D.O., vice president; Richard Wiecek, M.D., secretary/treasurer; Ben Ball, D.O., member-at-large; and Larry Von Kuster, M.D., credentials committee chairman.
The first Doctors' Day observance was held on March 30, 1933, sponsored by the Barrow County Auxiliary in Winder, Georgia. The idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and the recognition occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842. Through the years the red carnation has been used as the symbol of Doctors' Day.
On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors' Day. In 1990, then-President George Bush signed legislation designating March 30 as National Doctors' Day.
