Bellevue Historical Society keeps community's history alive
The Bellevue Historical Society was established in the 1980s to bring together people who share a common interest in Bellevue's local history and to further historical education. The society's office is located at 108 North West Street.
In 2002, the society purchased the historic Tremont House, 102 East Main Street, from the estate of Jean Leonard. Built in 1846 as a frontier hotel, it is historically important, and a major 'anchor' building for the downtown. The building is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. Restoration and renovation of this building is a primary focus for the society. As part of their strategic plan, the mortgage was paid in full in 2007. A mortgage burning celebration marked the occasion.
Poggemeyer Design Group was hired to assist with a master plan for the renovation. However, the size of the Tremont House made needed upgrades (such as an elevator) difficult at best. So, when the building at 102 North West became available in early 2008, the society voted to purchase it as well.
Named 'The Annex,' this building will house ADA-compliant restrooms, machinery for heating/cooling, an elevator, etc. and provide space for archival storage of the society's collections. At this time, the design phase is underway to maximize the use of space and complete a strategic plan for best use of the property.
The society board and members sponsor community events such as free Tremont House tours to showcase this important asset in its original state; House and Garden Tours; sales of Bill Oddo's books of historical Bellevue; and initiated its quarterly newsletter, the "Tremont Trumpet."
Memberships are available to all interested parties by contacting any society board member. Mailing address is P.O. Box 304, Bellevue OH 44811.
