Honor those who saved the world

Two local veterans were given a chance to visit the World War II Memorial last week in Washington D.C. through the Honor Flight program.

The trip was a wonderful way to recognize the veterans who are part of what is now called the "Greatest Generation".

Sixty years ago, Allied soldiers literally saved the world from the Axis threat through bloody, costly battles on multiple continents, including North America.

Back home, their families learned to make due with less of everything - gas, rubber, food - in order to support the war effort. Everything was rationed.

Each day our nation loses more and more of these beloved veterans and the others who kept the world afloat during truly impossible times.

As we go into this July Fourth weekend, all of us should make time to spend listening to what this generation has experienced and what they have learned. What these veterans and their families can share are precious memories, but most of us won't cherish that treasure until it is too late.
