Local church opens doors, heart for free community wide Thanksgiving Day dinner

Last Thanksgiving the annual harvest meal for the congregation at a local church was expanded as a free, community wide, Thanksgiving Day dinner in Wauseon. Participation was so strong the church is doing it for a second year.

The meal takes place Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 26) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in downtown Wauseon. It is free and open to everyone!

One of the meal's organizers, Beth Manson, explained that "Last year the participation was so great, we wanted to do it again."

"This is our gift to the community," explained co-organizer Bob Schultz.

"This is for people who don't have anywhere to go, or just want to spend the day with family, friends and neighbors," Schultz said. "We feel strongly that both Thanksgiving and Christmas are times when people should be together. But, because Thanksgiving falls during the week, there isn't a lot of time for people to travel any distance. Consequently, Thanksgiving is an overlooked holiday and people are alone."

Schultz, famous within the church for his culinary expertise, said the meal is the traditional fare of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce and a variety of delectable desserts." Schultz emphasized the "delectable desserts."

Transportation to and from the event can be arranged for anyone in the area needing a ride. The church will also provide meals for shut-ins. To schedule a ride or a home-delivered meal contact the church office (419-335-4065) Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For those driving, there is excellent parking in the city lot, located behind the church. The church is handicapped accessible with a wheelchair lift and elevator.
