Indians get first win over Bryan

The Wauseon girls varsity soccer team played the Bryan Golden Bears Thursday and beat them with a final score of 5-1.

This game was a huge success for the Indians considering that, in the history of Wauseon girls soccer, the Indians had never beaten Bryan.

The Indians came out ready to play, and their team goals were to not only win, but to not let Bryan score. In previous years, the Golden Bears had beaten the Indians with scores such as 8-0 and the Indians were ready to show them, and everyone else, that they could win.

With a score of 2-0 at halftime, the Indians were ready to come out and fight hard for a victory.

"You girls should go in [this half] with a chip on your shoulder," Wauseon head coach Jerry Bowser said at halftime. "Go in there and show them who is boss."

The Indians did indeed show them who was boss by continuing to score three more goals, however the total game shutout was lost during the last three minutes of the game when Bryan scored their only goal.

Goals were scored by senior Ashley Stidham, sophomores Ryan Smith, Natalie Miller and Miranda Wills and freshman Cassidy Ladd. Assists were made by Wills (2), Ladd, and sophomore Paige Frey.

Senior goal keeper for the Indians, Kaylee Torres, had 18 saves throughout the game.

A lot of communication between the players is a key aspect to the game of soccer, and the Indians were communicating to each other constantly during the game. The girls also worked well together in general and helped each other out. The team support for each other and the excitement held throughout the game also added to their success.

All of the Wauseon coaches, as well as the players, were very proud of the way the game was played and the final outcome.

"This was one of the best games I think I have ever seen any Wauseon girls soccer team play!" Bowser said.
