Indians top Pirates for first time

For the first time in Wauseon girls soccer history, the Indians walked away with a win against the Continental Pirates in their game played Thursday. The Indians handed the Pirates only their fourth loss in the last three seasons (including this season) with a final score of 3-2.

The Indians played tough against the Pirates' quick and physical offenders and midfielders.

Senior Kaylee Torres anchored Wauseon's defense with 12 saves out of Continental's 27 shots. Seniors Emily Bernath, Kim Daughtry and juniors Lacee Lovins, Caitlyn Callahan played a challenging but exciting defensive game.

Of course, these girls were not alone. Wauseon's midfielders, sophomores Ryan Smith, Paige Frey, Miranda Wills and Natalie Miller helped on defense as well as offense. They played close with the Indians' offense consisting of junior Janelle Shaw and senior Ashley Stidham.

Wauseon outshot Continental with 31 shots on goal.

Goals were scored by Miller, Frey and Shaw. Assists were made by Wills and Stidham.

"If I had to say one thing, I would say it was a great team win," Wauseon Coach Jerry Bowser said.

MC tie

While the Indians were losing 4-0 at halftime, Wauseon made a comeback to tie Miller City 5-5 on Tuesday.

Goals were made by Natalie Miller (1), Ryan Smith (2) and Miranda Wills (2). Miller scored on a corner kick, Smith scored both of her goals from outside the 18-yard box and Wills scored after battling with the goalie inside the six-yard box on both goals.

In a fight to get themselves back in the game, the Indians picked up their play in the second half. Although Miller City took 20 shots, goal keeper Kaylee Torres made 10 saves. Five shots went over the net. The Wauseon defense played tough against the Wildcats' quick offense and the Indian midfielders were almost always back helping their defenders.

Since the Indians have beaten the Wildcats with the score of 3-2 for the past two years, they were hoping for another win.

"If you had asked me at the beginning of the game if I would have been happy with a tie, I would have said no," said Bowser. "But am I happy it's a tie and not a loss? Yes."

Wauseon will host Bryan on Thursday.
