Indians drop first game
The Wauseon Indians played the Springfield Blue Devils Monday and were handed their first loss of the season with a score of 4-1.
In a well battled game on their home field the Indians played strong, but some unfortunate turns of the game played to their disadvantage cost them. Questionable referee calls and very physical play made it difficult for the Indians to get the ball safely off their half of the field and into the opposing team's net.
Losing at halftime with a score of 2-0, the Indians were ready to come out in the second half fighting hard to score and hopefully pull out a win.
Shortly after the second half began, junior Janelle Shaw scored, assisted by sophomore Ryan Smith. It was Shaw's second goal of the season.
The goal rallied the Indians, but they still found it difficult to score and tie up the game. Wauseon's offense altogether had 14 shots on goal, but they were having some trouble finishing the shots.
"We had plenty of chances but we didn't get the ball in the net. We need to finish chances," Wauseon head coach Jerry Bowser said.
Senior goal keeper for the Indians, Kaylee Torres, had 10 saves in all and had a lot of help from her defense. The defense, as well as the offense, was forced to play a physical game against quick forwards who took long shots and stacked the team inside the 18-yard box.
Even though it was their first loss, the Indians are not giving up and they are ready to bring the intensity to their next game.
The Indians are now 1-1-1, and their next game is home against Bryan High School on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m.
