'Weapons of the Spirit' documentary tells story of town that saved Jews
"Weapons of the Spirit," a documentary that chronicles the work of the citizens of Le Chambon, France, in rescuing Jews and others during World War II will be shown at Peace Community Church in two parts on Sunday, June 8 and Wednesday, June 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on both dates.
Le Chambon was a Protestant village of 3,000 people that rescued nearly 5,000 refugees, most of them Jewish. Led by Andre Trocme, the village pastor who said "the responsibility of Christians is to resist the violence that will be brought to bear on their consciences through the weapons of the spirit," citizens in Le Chambon risked their own safety by taking in any refugee who asked for their help.
Le Chambon continues to be a symbol of the effectiveness of non-violent resistance and the ability of communities to work together on behalf of others, even in the most difficult of situations. It is also a testimony to the Biblical injunction to "love your neighbor as yourself."
The film will be shown in two parts and be followed by discussion each evening, led by Al Carroll, a member of the congregation.
Peace Community Church is located at 44 E. Lorain St. Parking is available at the rear of the building.
