Boredom not allowed
This is to serve notice that the phrase "I'm bored" is banned in the city of Oberlin for the coming weekend. With all the activities scheduled, we expect the overriding chorus on Sunday night will be "I'm exhausted."
Homecoming festivities will mesh nicely with Community Day activities to make a full weekend for anyone in the community inclined to take advantage of free or low-cost activities. We would hope all our readers would partake in at least some.
The weekend starts Thursday with the Homecoming parade, forming at Prospect Elementary School and moving toward Oberlin High School at 5 p.m. Following the parade, a pep rally will be held at the high school stadium to encourage the football team to defeat the Wellington Dukes.
Of course, that game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. But we're getting ahead of ourselves a little.
At 4:45 p.m., on Friday, Oberlin College will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reopening of the historic Apollo Theater. Among the honored guests for that ceremony will be television and movie stars Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, who contributed to the renovation.
At 5 p.m., the Oberlin Athletic Boosters will host an all-you-can-eat tailgate party. That will end at 7 p.m., giving fans time to find their seats for the big game. A Homecoming bonfire will follow the game.
On Saturday morning, free tickets will be available from 9 to 9:45 a.m. for the 10 a.m. show at the Apollo. That will begin a whole list of Community Day activities outlined elsewhere in this edition. The day will conclude with the Homecoming Dance at the high school.
We urge everyone to come and participate in one or all of these activities. It promises to be anything but boring.
