Stop domestic violence now

To the editor:

The month of October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During this October, Genesis House domestic violence center will launch its first ever Purple Light Nights awareness campaign and is asking community members to become involved.

Throughout Lorain County, Genesis House invites all residents, businesses and public institutions to shine a purple light (which is symbolic of domestic violence) on the outside of their homes or facilities to remember domestic violence homicide victims, to celebrate the courage of those who have survived, and to draw attention to those who are still living with domestic violence.

Domestic violence extends far beyond physical abuse. It is a growing problem that can be battled through awareness. Genesis House is asking everyone to help ensure the safety of our community's women, men, children, and teens by participating in this campaign.

One of the main goals of launching this campaign is to create a dialogue about domestic violence and its impact on our community and commitment to ending violence in intimate relationships. Purple Light Night is a way to provide information and services to those who are still living with violence and abuse.

The Oberlin Police Department is aware that not all households may have purple lights to display. We are simply asking residents to show their support by displaying purple ribbons either attached to car antennas or pinned to clothing.

On the first and third Thursdays of October, the Oberlin Police Department in conjunction with domestic violence legal advocate Marge McCoy, will be distributing purple ribbons and pins for residents to display and show their support. Informational brochures will also be available to start the conversation about domestic violence and publicize this campaign.

The Oberlin Police Department is asking all community members to stop by the main lobby to the Oberlin Police Department between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Oct. 1 and 15 to show support for all those affected by domestic violence.
