Issue 28 helps firefighters

To the editor:

On Nov. 4, when we go to the polls, I ask that voters vote yes on Issue 28. Issue 28 will provide funds for street repair, park improvements, sidewalk installation and repairs, but more importantly it provides funding for a much-needed expansion and improvements to the fire station.

The current station was built in 1976 and served its firefighters well. But since 1976 the fire department's responsibilities have increased. The purpose of the renovation is to improve firefighter safety and response, and to better meet equipment and storage needs.

Emergency calls have increased by more than 360 percent, and firefighters have taken on more responsibilities than just firefighting, such as EMS, hazmat, technical rescue, and a greater role in fire prevention. Another key increase is state- and federally-mandated training, which is why an adequate training and meeting room is so important.

Making the station handicap accessible, segregating air refill stations from other work areas, firefighter safety, and mitigating diesel exhaust which now contaminates firefighter clothing and seeps in to office and sleep areas, are important goals of the station renovation and expansion.

Issue 28 is a one-fifth percent replacement earned income tax levy that will replace a current levy for sewer replacement and repairs. Since it is a replacement levy you will not see an increase in the amount you pay for income taxes to the city if you work in Oberlin. The majority who will end up paying for this levy -- 64 percent -- do not live in the city.

I ask for the community's vote to help pass this levy, to help our firefighters and improve our community.

Mark Rozmarynowycz, president

Oberlin Firefighters Association
