Youth orchestras to stage concert Sunday, 3:30 p.m.
The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras (NOYO) are presenting the first concert of their 41st season. The concert will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, in Warner Concert Hall, 77 W. College St. The orchestras are under the direction of Joanne Erwin and James Kalyn.
The concerts this season will focus on classical music; NOYO's theme this year is Simply Classical. The Symphonetta, the younger of the two orchestras, will feature works by David Stone and Merle Issac. The Philharmonia orchestra will play Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, and Prokofiev's Classical Symphony.
The Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras exist to provide a progressive orchestral program with challenging educational musical opportunities in orchestral and small ensemble training and performance for young instrumentalists under the guidance of professional musicians, using the resources of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Erwin, professor of music education, is NOYO's artistic director. She also conducts the Symphonetta.
Kalyn, who conducts the Philharmonia, is in his fifth season as conductor of the Illuminations Festival Orchestra in North Carolina. He appears as a guest conductor, coach, and teacher around the United States and Canada. NOYO's conducting and teaching staff is augmented by students from the Oberlin Conservatory, who serve as conductors for Camerata, assistant conductors for Philharmonia and Symphonetta, and sectional coaches.
The orchestras rehearse every Sunday from September through April at the Conservatory of Music. In addition to presenting three concerts during the season, students also have the opportunity to tour to other cities, participate in a fall retreat, in master classes, and in a summer chamber music camp. Young musicians ages 8 to 18 interested in membership should contact Patricia Rush at the NOYO office, 775-3059.
