School board postpones Oct. 27 meeting
The Oberlin board of education will hold their second meeting of October on Nov. 10.
Superintendent Geoff Andrews said the Oct. 27 meeting is being postponed until Nov. 10, when no meeting had been scheduled. This is being done to allow interested parties sufficient time to submit application materials for the current board vacancy.
Paula Jones submitted her resignation on Monday, Oct. 12, saying she was "going through a challenging personal time right now." The remaining members of the school board accepted the resignation on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
At the same meeting, the board set a deadline of Friday, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. for submitting application materials. However, state law requires school boards to fill vacancies at their next regular or special meeting not less than 10 and not more than 30 days after the resignation, so the board has until Nov. 12 to fill the vacancy.
"This law was created to accommodate the typical school district board meeting schedule, which is once per month," Andrews said. "Oberlin's school board meets twice a month in most months, so this legal requirement necessitated the postponement of the October meeting to Nov. 10."
The board will hold a special meeting to adjourn to executive session on Nov. 7 to interview candidates for the vacancy, just as they did in October of 2005, the last time there was a board vacancy.
Interested parties should submit a resume, a letter of interest, and three letters of reference to the Board Office, attention School Board President Beth Weiss, 153 North Main Street. Weiss said she has already heard from several people who were interested in filling the position, and were sending their application materials.
