Phoenix shut out Longhorns
The Oberlin Phoenix (6-3, 3-3) on Friday improved their record in the Patriot Athletic Conference stripes division after delivering a crushing blow to the Lutheran West Longhorns (0-9, 3-4) by a score of 18-0.
For the third straight week in a row, it was another mud bowl on the gridiron. Throughout the first quarter, both the Phoenix and the Longhorn defense prevented anyone from entering the end zone.
Early in the second quarter, quarterback Gib Harris threw a 34-yard pass to Geris Geiger who ran the ball successfully past the goal posts, making it 6-0. However, Erickson Andrews could not get the ball through the uprights for the extra point.
The Oberlin defense -- led by Dorian Pretlow, Anthony Barnhill and Mason Hart -- prevented the Longhorns' offense from getting anywhere near the goal line. The Phoenix led by 6 going in to the half.
Going in to the third, the Phoenix were not done adding to their lead.
Harris decided to run the football nine yards for the Phoenix's second touchdown of the evening. However, the two-point conversion failed after the Longhorn defense prevented Aaron James from getting the ball in to the end zone.
The Phoenix defense proved to be yet again a force to be reckoned with after stopping the Longhorns dad in their tracks.
In the final quarter of the game, Harris handed the ball off to Devin Martin who ran 70 yards for the Phoenix's third and final touchdown of the evening.
Harris' attempt for another two-point conversion failed after he was unable to get the ball passed the goal posts.
The Phoenix will be back at home this Friday to take on the Clearview Clippers at 7:30 p.m.
