John Macek
John Jacob Macek, 86, died on Monday, July 6, in Las Vegas, Nev.
He was born in Cleveland, but moved around, living in Ohio, Nevada and Florida.
He was a friendly, talkative man, who loved to help people. His professional career was that of painter, paper-hanger and decorator. But he was a big supporter of many clubs and organizations. He loved to put on parties and cook his corned beef or do a clambake, giving the proceeds to whatever activity needed the money.
He was devoted to helping American disabled veterans. He was a service officer for the VFW Post 7572 in Marblehead, and the American Legion. He was appointed one year as district service officer. While as a resident of Johnson's Island, he served as deputy sheriff of Ottawa County and a peace officer in Danbury Township. He was one of the first to establish the Memorial Day service, that is still held today, at the confederate cemetery on Johnson's Island. He served as president of the Johnson's Island Club, being one of the founding members.
He was involved with many an activity to raise money for the Johnson's Island clubhouse. He also did a lot to help out in political campaigns and causes in the Marblehead area and Cleveland. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was given an honorable discharge as a veteran of World War II.
He did reside in Florida, but loved the city of Las Vegas, Nev., dying in the place he enjoyed so much. He will certainly be missed.
