Janice Heckenhauer

Janice Elizabeth (Wood) Heckenhauer, 78, of Lakeside, died Sept. 14, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1930, in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of James Edmond and Ruth Alice (Nicholas) Wood. She married John Frederick Heckenhauer, and he preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Towson High School, Towson, Md., and also The Ohio State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in secondary education.

She was a case worker for the Department of Public Welfare, Baltimore County, Baltimore, Md., but dedicated her life to her family and volunteer work in the various cities where she and her husband and children lived, including Bronson Medical Hospital, Kalamazoo Mich., where she coordinated the hospital volunteers. She and her husband, along with their children, lived in various cities around the country, but retired to their summer home in Lakeside over 20 years ago. Lakeside has always been considered their home.

She was a member of the Delta Gamma Alumna Association; Lakeside Noon Day Club; and Friends of the Hotel. She spent many winter months over the years wallpapering with other volunteers in the historic Lakeside Hotel. She often coordinated the quilt ticket sales, and volunteered for the pancake breakfast, ice cream social and rummage sale.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine Ruth Domeier, Rochester, Mich. and Elizabeth (Harry G.) Turner, Anthem, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Michael Skierski and Sarah Domeier; one sister, Ruth Anne (Wood) Snedaker, Boyton Beach, Fla.; and five nieces and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Neidecker, LeVeck and Crosser Funeral Home, 7755 E. Harbor Rd., Lakeside-Marblehead, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Arnold Pierson officiating. Burial will follow in Sackett Cemetery.
