The palace you see use to belong to Sadaam Hussein's daughter. As you can see it has a few holes in the roof where it was hit by U.S. missiles. It was a hot day about 110 degrees. Blue skies and sunshine filled the sky this past weekend as many people came out to pick their pumpkins at Bergman Orchard on St. Rt. 269. Bergman Orchards is celebrating 150 years. (Photo by Pat Lukac). As oil prices rise, Ohio motorists have seen the cost of gasoline go up nine cents from last week, making for two straight weeks of increasing prices. Ohio gas also costs more than it did a month ago, when the average was $2.47. Last year at this time, gas was $2.72. The cost of crude oil is at its highest levels of the year, approaching $80 per barrel. Last week, crude broke out of a five-month trading range of between $65 and $75 a barrel on a weakening U.S. dollar and expectations that oil demand will eventually recover as the world economy grows next year. It was a rainy Friday night for the Danbury Lakers 2009 Homecoming game. Pictured above is Rodney Johnson as he catches this Northwood kickoff in a driving rainstorm. The Rangers upended the Lakers, 49-8. (Photo by John Kozak) The Stonecrushers played at home this past Sunday against St. Mary's. Pictured above are the Stonecrushers on the field, 56 is sixth grader Jacob Keubler. St. Mary's beat the Stonecrushers 23-8. The fifth grade team won their game, 15-8. Touchdowns were made by Sam Tyson and Grady Mark. Extra point was made by Grady Mark and two point conversion by Nick Bossetti. Great plays were made by the offensive line especially Jarred Koenig. A touchdown was made by Jalen Scott and two punt conversions by Geraldo Salinas. The cheerleaders did a great job cheering on their team. Spirit awards were given to Bailey Kukay. The Stonecrusher dance team did a dance at half-time of the sixth grade game. The dance team consists of 12 Stonecrusher cheerleaders and is coached by Karlene Browne. The boys final home game will be Sunday, Oct. 18, at Biro Field. Game time is 1 p.m. for the fourth and fifth graders and 2:30 p.m. for the sixth grade. (Photo submitted) Freighter McKee Sons waits offshore as the winds blew on Wednesday, Oct. 7. This photo was taken at 2 p.m., and a quarry spokesperson said that it had been anchored out there for about three hours. The freighter could not continue into the Lafarge Quarry stone loading dock as the winds would not allow the ship to be able to properly dock and be secured. The Vineyard on Catawba hosted the fourth annual Autumn Fest on Oct. 3. The festival included vendors, crafters, homemade baked goods, lunch by Second St. Diner, a 50/50 drawing, and much more. Many guests took advantage of tours of the newly renovated condos on The Vineyard's campus. Prospective residents may now enjoy a stay in the newly-decorated guest suite. Some of the boys from Boy Scout Troop 331 canoed 10 miles of the Sandusky River south of Fremont on Saturday, Sept. 19, from Fort Seneca to Wolf Creek Park. On Sunday, Sept. 26, the fifth grade Stonecrusher team won their game against the Edison Chargers, 12-8. Touchdowns were scored by Sam Tyson and Nick Bossetti. The sixth grade team also won their game, 16-15. It was a close, exciting game. Touchdowns were made by Connor Lenthe and Nick Bossetti again as the fifth grader played in the sixth grade game. The two point conversion, which gave us a winning score, was made by Geraldo Falinas. Touchdowns scored were made possible by a great effort by the offensive line. The Stonecrushers play this Sunday, Oct. 4, in Bellevue. (Photo by Tammy Cain) The Lakeside Heritage Society recently received some photos from Charles Wolfe, Lakeside. Theses photos came from his professional collection which he used as publicity for the Lakeside Association. The majority of the photos were taken in the 1930s and 1940s. Pictured above is a home on the Marblehead peninsula which looks as if they had just picked peaches and were selling them from their yard. Does anyone recognize this home? It is possibly the Wahlers farm orchard. Pictured above is the nearly completed pond-side boardwalk/observation deckÊat Meadowbrook. The work should be finished this week, depending on the weather. It was funded through a grant from the Office of Coastal Management who also funded the completed paved trail leading to the deck.
