Man killed in Ohio who had fled Ind. shooting

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Police say a man who escaped death earlier this year in Indiana has been killed in Ohio.

Toledo police Sgt. Phil Toney says 33-year-old Maurice Purley was shot next to his house in the city Monday evening after he went outside with someone who had come to see him. Purley was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where he died.

Police have no suspects. Toney says it's likely Purley knew the gunman but investigators have no idea why he was killed.

Authorities say in March, Purley was at a site in Fort Wayne, Ind., when a man started shooting, killing two people. Toney says Purley survived by playing dead, though the gunman saw him when he eventually fled, chased after him and took eight shots, wounding Purley.
