On Sept. 24, the Mohawk FFA, a satellite of Vanguard Sentinel Career Center, competed in the county soil judging competition, which was held on the VonStein Farm in Wyandot County.
On the rural side, the Mohawk team got second overall. Overall, the following students placed in the top 10 at the contest -- Donny Smith (second), Patrick Brose (third), Ira Kuenzli (sixth), Jarred Shellhouse (seventh), Grant Price (eighth), and Jordan Long (ninth).
The urban team earned a first place overall finish, thanks to a first place finish from Niki Elchert, a second place from Charlie Frankart, third place by Kirsten Shellhouse and fourth place finish from Greg Pennington. Other top 10 placers for urban were Kendra Dininger (fifth) and Alex Colich (eighth).
The top four placers from each area of soil judging had the opportunity to advance on to the district contest, which was held Oct. 1, at the Smalley Farm, also in Wyandot County.
The rural team took third overall, and will be advancing on to the state competition. For the rural team, Donny Smith got third overall, while Jarred Shellhouse took 13th place. Ira Kuenzli and Patrick Brose also competed.
The urban team got 11th at districts. The team consisted of Charlie Frankart, Kendra Dininger, Kirsten Shellhouse and Greg Pennington.
