Swanton was the best years of our lives
Swanton was the best years of our lives
On a recent visit to Swanton I picked up a copy of the Enterprise, which my hostess allowed me to bring home and which I've now read all the way through. What a good newspaper.
Once upon a time, about half a lifetime ago, my husband Robert Behm was the paper's editor and I helped on publishing day getting the papers unstuck in the ancient press, all the while yelling "stop the presses!"
It was a major undertaking, with all those little carriers waiting to deliver their papers, but it was exciting, too.
At any rate, we both loved doing it, but raising four kids (ages one to seven), began to be daunting, so we decided to respond to a Cleveland company that recruited Bob for its Pittsburgh office. Maybe it was the worst decision of our lives... newspapering being in our blood. It's tough in today's revolution in the print business, and you are to be much admired for sticking to that most honorable of professions. May you continue to prosper.
Your coverage of council and school board meetings, the new airline, the Memorial Day event, and many other stories geared to your audience reflect your involvement in the community.
May I say your David Coehrs is a very real asset. I enjoyed everything he wrote and laughed out loud at (his column) Slightly Skewed.
Our Swanton tenure was from 1952 to 1961 - perhaps the best years of our lives. Our friends then are friends still.
