Pulling taffy at library
A taffy pulling event will be held for teens this month at the Swanton Public Library. The event for grades 6-12 will be held Saturday, Oct. 14 from 2-3 p.m.
Amos Campbell, the Taffy Man, will teach you how to pull taffy and give you some history about taffy pulling. Taffy is a type of chewy candy. It is made by stretching or pulling a sticky mass of boiled sugar, butter, flavorings, and coloring until fluffy. When this process is complete, the taffy is rolled, cut into small pastel-colored pieces and wrapped in wax paper to keep it soft.
It usually has a fruity flavor, but other flavors are common as well, including molasses and the classic unflavored taffy. Taffy pulling was a traditional Saturday night social pastime of the 1800's.
If you come to the program dressed in period costume, you will be entered in the Costume Contest to win a box of salt water taffy. The best costume will be chosen by the Taffy Man and his assistant, Flo.
The first 25 teens to sign up will get in free. Each additional teen will have to pay $2.25 when they sign up. Each taffy puller will get to shape his/her taffy around an apple to create a "taffy apple" to take home. Call (419) 826-2760 to sign up.
