Swanton goalkeeper Jackie Wiederman slides out in an attempt to reach the ball

Lady Dogs drop two

By PATTY STAMBAUGH

Enterprise Sports Writer

The Swanton Lady Bulldogs soccer team started the 2008 season with two tough losses this past week. The Dogs fell to both the Ottawa Glandorf Knights and Bryan Golden Bears.

The Bulldogs lost to Ottawa-Glandorf 7-0 in the season opener on Monday.

Swanton had a chance to take a 1-0 lead early against the Titans, but sophomore Kendra Eitniear's shot bounced off the post, leaving the score knotted at zero all.

Just two minutes after the missed opportunity, Ottawa Glandorf took a one point lead when the ball sailed past goalie Jackie Weiderman with 24:43 left in the first period.

Two minutes later Molly Laibe added another point to the Titan score when her shot just got past Weiderman, who came out of the goal to grab the ball.

With roughly six minutes remaining in the first, Brooke Zynda gave Ottawa Glandorf a 3-0 cushion as she beat out senior defender Anna Kusz to meet Weiderman one-on-one.

Eitniear would get another chance to get Swanton on the board with two minutes to play before the half but she dribbled in too far and was stopped by the goalie, leaving the Dogs trailing by three at the break.

The Titans would continue controlling play in the final half of play, when Breann Schroeder added another goal just five minutes into the second. Another goal would score for Ottawa Glandorf with 19:37 to go as Kaylee Borer headed the ball into the back of the net, increasing the lead to 5-0.

The Knights would net two more before the end of the game, closing Swanton's season opener with a 7-0 loss.

Swanton will be in action again when they host Toledo Christian on Thursday.
