Police Blotter
* May 17, 4:30 p.m.: Officer Aviles met with a man at the station in reference to an assault he had received from his fiancé. He stated that when he returned home from work his fiancé was in a hurry to leave for the evening and wanted him to watch their son. He further stated that he had given her $50 but was told that it wasn't enough. When she didn't get any additional money she went into a rage and attacked him physically.
Scratches and swelling were noted and photos were taken. The man said she attacked him again as he tried leaving the property. It was noted their son left the area with his aunt until things cooled down. The man stated his stepsister had seen the incident and she was requested to come to the station with her mother to give a statement. The man stated earlier he wanted to pursue charges against his fiancé regarding the assault which he did for domestic violence, along with a temporary protection order for himself and their son. Lacey Lynn Vitovitz of Wellington has not been located, but a warrant has been issued for her arrest.
* May 19, 2:53 p.m.: Officer Shelton was dispatched to a Jones Road apartment in reference to a theft of money. A woman told police when she went to her mailbox to get her mail she observed a man exiting her apartment. She asked him what he was doing and he replied "I wanted to know what was going on" and kept walking. The woman further stated that she opened her drawer on her table and $50 was missing. There was a 20-minute time lapse after the man had left.
A short time later the man that was possibly involved with the theft was located with a few friends on a bench at the corner of West Herrick and Depot Street. All three men stated they had been downtown for a while. Officer Shelton ran a warrant check on Jason Williams and it came back with a hit through Ashland County Sheriff's Department for a probation violation. He was taken into custody. It was noted all three subjects walked downtown and could not have made it from Deer Run that quick. There are no subjects at this time.
* May 23, 7:26 p.m.: A woman met with Officer Provoznik due to her being concerned about her friend being abused by her boyfriend. Recently her friend received injuries that required medical attention, however she will not involve law enforcement. The woman became concerned when she tried to contact her friend to no avail. While completing a written statement the woman received a text message from her friend which reassured her she was all right.
* May 24, 1:10 a.m.: While conducting a random registration check it was discovered Donna S. Jones of Sullivan was under a license suspension. A traffic stop was conducted and Jones was advised she is currently under an FRA suspension through Elyria Municipal Court. Jones was transported to the WPD and was formally charged with FRA DUS. Jones was released on a personal bond in the amount of $1,000 and given a court date. Her vehicle was towed.
* May 24, 7:42 p.m.: Officer Melda found a credit card on the floor at Certified Gas Station. The card was brought to the WPD and placed in the property room until the owner claims it.
* May 24, 5:13 p.m.: Officer Heathcoat located a bike which was possibly stolen or abandoned in the wooded area of the recreation park. The bike was taken to the WPD and placed in lock-up for safe keeping.
* May 25, 11:44 p.m.: Police went to a North Mill Street apartment in reference to a suicidal male. Upon arrival outside the apartment, calm conversation could be heard with two males and a female. Police knocked on the door and spoke with a woman who stated the man on the couch who only minutes earlier was observed to be holding a pistol to his head threatening to harm himself. The other male requested that he give him the gun, which he did. Police entered the apartment and found the sliding glass door shattered. It was noted the male was going through a rough time and when asked if he had thoughts of hurting himself he replied he had on several occasions. The male was transported to EMH and was left in the care of the hospital. The handgun was given to Officer Heathcoat by the female and was then placed into evidence. There were no gun shots fired as was thought earlier.
* May 25, 12:15 a.m.: Officer Smosny was dispatched to the corner of North Main and Jones Street for a single vehicle accident. Upon arriving to the scene he was met by Officer Melda who was handling another call. He advised that while transporting a prisoner he discovered a man had wrecked his motorcycle on the curb. The motorcycle was laying on its side with several scratches and leaking fuel. Officer Smosny made contact with the man who was sitting on the lawn and appeared to be highly intoxicated. When asked what happened, the man stated he had an accident and had a couple of beers within the last two hours. Joseph S. Grogg of Elyria was placed under arrest for OVI. He was transported to the WPD where he said he would not participate in any sobriety tests and refused to provide a breath sample. While processing the paperwork Grogg advised he could not read the papers without his glasses. When asked where his glasses were he advised that he did not have any. Grogg was charged with OVI, third within 20 years, expired driver's license and no motorcycle endorsement. He was assigned a court date.
* May 25, 7:14 a.m.: Officer Smosny was dispatched to a Greenview Court residence in reference to a possible breaking and entering. He was met by the homeowner who advised the previous night he heard a noise on his rear deck. He went to the that area and turned on his security lights and found everything to be OK. The next morning it was discovered the screen on the kitchen window had been cut. Although the screen had been cut and window unlocked, it appeared no access had been made from the window. The homeowners further advised no items had been taken.
* May 25, 1:53 p.m.: Officer Kobasher was dispatched to a Parkside Reserve residence in reference to a burglary. He met the homeowner who stated she arrived home at about 12:05 a.m., placed her purse on the kitchen counter and went to bed. When she went to open her patio door at 8:30 a.m. she found her purse had been moved and was now on the grill located on her back porch. She further advised $28 had been taken from her wallet but everything else was there. It was noted the front and back doors were locked and the door knob was locked on the service door entering the garage, but the homeowner was not sure if it was pulled shut all the way. No forced entry could be observed on any of the doors.
* May 28, 8:50 a.m.: A woman came to the WPD with ammunition that she found while cleaning out her father's house. The ammo was placed in an evidence locker to be destroyed.
* May 29, 12:33 a.m.: Officer Davidson met with a woman at the WPD in reference to a harassment complaint. The woman stated her ex-boyfriend has been harassing her by calling her and sending text messages. She showed the officer her phone on which she received 17 text messages in rapid succession over a period of 37 minutes. Also observed was the woman had text messaged him back after each call. The woman stated the last four calls she told the man to "leave me alone." The woman would like a report in case this behavior continues, at which time she stated she could pursue charges.
* May 29, 3:12 a.m.: While patrolling the recreation park Officer Varner observed a bike laying in the grass near the basketball courts. The bike was brought to the WPD where it will be put into the basement of Town Hall.
