Eighth grade Dukes enjoy undefeated season
The Wellington eighth grade football team finished an undefeated 7-0 season with a big win over Buckeye, 52-8, last Tuesday night. The game also marked the 23rd consecutive win for the team who has been undefeated since the end of the 2006 season.
"They had a team concept. They understood it took everyone to win," said coach Keith Rowland. "They worked hard and played hard."
Rowland did mention, however, some outstanding players on the team - Quinn Deninger, Chase Spieler, Jajuan Howard, Matt Bolick, Deron Broadwater. "They are hardworking kids and very coachable," the coach said. "They are true leaders, both in school and on the field. They are excellent leaders on the team." He also noted that brothers Sam and Jacob Miller were "exceptional."
The coach said he has encouraged the players to continue their efforts as they move on to high school football next year. "I told them they really need to keep working. They can't live on the 7-0. They had a great accomplishment and need to keep up the effort."
Rowland said the winning streak for over three years "says a lot about the program and the coaches." He is looking for a good season again next year.
