Group needs holiday lights

The Miracle on Main Street Committee would like to make this holiday season spectacular. They are asking for people to donate new mini Christmas lights so they can decorate the downtown for the holiday season. Donations can be dropped off at either Main Street (255 Park Ave.) or Perk Avenue Coffee Shop (254 Park Ave.).

Meal supports Amherst Special Olympics

The Amherst Lions Club and Amherst Steele Leo Club are hosting a lasagna dinner at Amherst Junior High School on Wednesday, Nov. 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 each, children under 3 eat free. The meal includes lasagna, tossed salad, breadstick, dessert and beverage. Dine in or take out. Proceeds from the dinner go to support the Amherst Special Olympics programs. Shupe PTO meets Nov. 4

Fall book sale is Nov. 7

The Friends of the Amherst Public Library will hold their fall book sale on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a special preview for members of the organization on Friday, Nov. 6, from 2-5 p.m. Included in the sale are new books, best sellers, children's and a few cookbooks. There will also be some vintage sheet music, and VHS movies adult through children.

Early aviation topic of talk

The Brownhelm Historical Association will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Carriage Barn at Mill Hollow. After the business meeting Bill Cutcher will present a power point program about "Early Aviation in Lorain." Refreshments will be served and the public is welcome to attend this free program.

It's a mystery bus trip

The Men's Auxiliary at Amherst VFW Post 1662 located at 165 Cleveland Ave., is hosting a mystery bus trip on Saturday, Nov. 7. The bus will leave at 11 a.m. and return at 7 p.m. Cost is $20 per person and there are a few seats still available. All money must be paid by Oct. 23. Post hosting clambake Oct. 31

The Amherst VFW Post 1662, located at 165 Cleveland Ave., is having a clambake on Saturday, Oct. 31. Dinner will be $20 per person for a dozen clams, chicken, corn on the cob, potatoes, broth and chowder. Dinner will be served from 6-8 p.m. Advance tickets must be purchased no later than Oct. 28. Tickets are available at the post or call 988-8102 for more information.

Author to discuss quarry history

James Heib, author of "Sandstone Center of the World," will discuss the sandstone industry of yesterday and today during a general meeting of the Amherst Historical Society today, Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grange-Schoolhouse at 763 Milan Avenue. Sandstone from the local quarries was used in many buildings, not only in the local area but also around the country and into Canada. A short business meeting will precede the program and a social time with refreshments will conclude the evening. The public is welcome.

WHO to host paprikas dinner

The WHO (Women Helping Others) group will host a chicken paprikas dinner at the Grange Hall on Milan Avenue on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $8 each; children five and younger can eat free. The meal will feature Your Deli chicken paprikas, salad, rolls and butter, dessert, coffee and water. Call 440-541-6260 for tickets. There will also be a $100 value lottery tree, a 50/50 raffle, and a Chinese auction.

Library friends to meet

The October meeting of the Friends of the Amherst Public Library will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 11:30 a.m. at the library. The annual book sale will be held Nov. 7. New members welcome.

Leaf pick-up scheduled

The City of Amherst will begin its fall leaf collection on Monday, Nov. 2.

* Leaves should be raked to the tree lawn and be ready on the first day of the scheduled pickup.

* Do not rake leaves into the street.

* Tree limbs, grass clippings, and bagged leaves should be collected by Allied Waste on residents' regular trash day through November. These items will not be picked up by the city.

The scheduled dates for leaf pick-up are:

* Nov. 2-6 and Nov. 16-20 for residents living on streets north of the railroad tracks.

* Nov. 9-13 and Nov. 23-25 for residents living on streets south of the railroad tracks.

Church plans Christmas bazaar

St. John's U.C.C. third annual Christmas Bazaar will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge. Homemade Christmas craft items, baby items, American Girl Doll Clothes (18"), toys and other gift items as well as baked goods, jams, jellies and food items will be for sale. There will also be a white elephant table with various items. Light lunch and refreshments, including sandwiches, soup, coffee, tea, water, etc. will be for sale. The church is located at 416 Leonard St. in South Amherst.

Lean to crochet at library

Pat Catan's in Amherst has joined forces with the Amherst Public Library to help teens and adults learn basic crochet stitches and complete a crochet. Vivian from Pat Catan's in Amherst will teach participants how to complete a scarf, afghan or granny square project during a series of crochet workshops on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Workshop dates are Nov. 3, 10, and 24 and Dec. 1, 8, and 15. Students should bring a size "J" crochet hook and their favorite skein of project yarn. Call the library's reference desk at 988-4230 to register or just drop in. The Amherst Public Library is located at 221 Spring St.

Fine forgiveness Nov. 1-7

The Amherst Public Library is having fine forgiveness week Nov. 1-7. Overdue items may be returned free with a non-perishable food item. Those who have existing fines can have them waived, $1 for each food item brought in to benefit the local food pantry. Call the library at 988.4230 for more information.

SCOA meets Nov. 6 for lunch

The Senior Citizens of Amherst (SCOA) will meet Friday, Nov. 6 at the Eagles on Milan Avenue at noon for a catered lunch. The entertainment will be John Kowalski and his keyboard.
