South Amherst At-A-Glance

At the Sept. 28 regular meeting of the South Amherst village council (members present Robert James, David Leshinkski, Dennis Burdue, Donna Hauck, John Green and Barbara Becker), council:

* Heard Debbie Harrell from IRG give a summary of IRG's current projects and informed council she will be attending the council meetings on a regular basis in order to keep the village informed.

* Heard the mayor report a price quote from the county for striping the streets for $7,409.47; the recycling trailer was stolen, which was reported to the police.

* Heard the clerk inform the mayor and council that the BWC premiums will be increasing as well as their unemployment rates.

* Heard the storm sewer on Annis Road was cleaned and work may begin on Fern and Maple with weather permitting; a street light is out on the west end of town; and the ditch is dug at 429 Annis Rd. but they are replacing an existing tap.

* Heard bids went out for the fire station; the next discussion will be on what to do with the little building by the fire station. The fire department would like to keep it for storage.

* Heard Officer Kyle White resigned; they approved a motion accepting his resignation.

* Heard there was a concern with the emissions from the fire trucks. Green suggested it should be discussed with Zwick about cross ventilation; also discussed the distance firefighters drive to get a fire call for the village.

* Heard Don Pignitella and Bob Lipscomb's terms are coming to an end; council would like to find replacements before their terms end.

* Heard the contract from RLCWA was received. RLCWA increased the rate to the village in January 2007. However, they had not billed the village for the increase and the error was caught in an audit. Thus, they sent a letter to the village informing them there would be an additional fee of $731.05 per month for 24 months to correct the arrearage. The BPA is working on a new rate schedule due to the expiration to the current rate ordinance for the water rates in the village.

* Accepted the resignation of Nancy Gildner as clerk/treasurer effective Sept. 30, 2009. Deanna Griffith will be sworn in as the interim clerk/treasurer on Oct. 1.

* Heard trick or treat will be held on Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The parade will be at 3 p.m.

* Heard the village may not be receiving any more sold waste grants. Approved John Peck to access a list of taxpayers to cross check with the state list at a cost not to exceed $270. Voted to contact the county for striping the streets.
