Bulletin Board for Nov. 12
The Amherst Public Library board of trustees will hold a regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. at the library. The meeting is open to the public.
Parents of Powers School students are invited to the Powers PTO meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at noon at the Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 1100 Cleveland Avenue (just west of Rite Aid). A baby-sitter is available for youngsters, free of charge. Contact Tammi Hill, PTO president at 984-3921 for more information. The group will be doing some Christmas wrapping at the meeting.
The Friends of the Amherst Public Library will meet Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the library. November's meeting is scheduled one week earlier due to Thanksgiving. There will be no December meeting. New members are always welcome.
Scouts cooking dinner
Amherst Boy Scout Troop 427 will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser including spaghetti with meatballs, roll/bread, salad, dessert and beverage, on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 3-7 p.m. at the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 396 Park Avenue. The purpose is to raise money to purchase additional equipment and help send boys to summer camp. Donations are $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, $3 for children ages 2-10 and under 2, free. Walk-ins are welcome and take out will also be available. To pre-purchase tickets or for more information contact either Chuck or Marsha Daugherty at 988-2950.
Childhood shots offered
Child Immunizations Clinics are a cooperative effort of the three Health Departments in Lorain County who are providing this service to county residents through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health.
These clinics are open to any family with children, ages birth to 18 years, needing immunizations. There is a fee for each immunization. However, no one will be denied an immunization due to inability to pay.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must bring the child's current immunization record.
A clinic will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Amherst VFW, 165 Cleveland St.

St. Pete's cooking
St. Peter United Church of Christ is having their monthly spaghetti dinner on Sunday, Nov. 16, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at 582 Church St. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for children (4-12) and children 3 and eat free. Tickets may be purchased through the church office by calling 988-4965. Carry-outs will be available.
The Amherst Quarterback Club will be holding a mattress sale on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Steele High School, to support the football program. Brand name mattresses will be sold at 40 to 50 percent off the retail price.
The Comet Corner, a small spirit store located inside Steele High School, is operated as a fundraiser by the PTO. They sell beverages, snacks, school supplies, English and social study books, umbrellas, sweatpants, T-shirts, jackets, travel mugs, polo shirts, flannel pants and shorts, sweatshirts and many other Comets items. The shop is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. They will have additional evening hours for the holiday season including the following: Wednesday, Nov. 12, 19 and Dec. 3, 10 and 17 from 5-8 p.m. Call 988-5339 for more information.
Learn about old tools
On Thursday, Nov. 20, the Heritage House program at the Amherst Community Center at 7 p.m. will be Bob Wilburn. He will discuss and display his unusual collection of old tools. Residents are invited to bring an old tool to share. Light refreshments will be served. Call Anna Gaydosh at 988-2325 for more information. The program is free and open to the public.
The fourth annual "Buckeye Bash" with OSU vs. Michigan will be held at the St. Joseph Parish Social Hall on Saturday, Nov. 22. The game time is to be announced, but doors will open 45 minutes before game time. There will be a 50/50 raffle and score squares. Cost is $15 per ticket which includes food provided by Moosehead restaurant, beer and sodas. You can reserve a table of eight for $100. This event is for adults only. The game will be broadcast on a large projector screen and televisions throughout the hall. For tickets or more information, call 988-4244.
A "Community Forum on Education - Vision 2015" will be held Monday, Nov. 17 at Firelands Elementary and Monday Nov. 24 at South Amherst Middle School. Residents can chose to attend either forum. Free hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available at 6 p.m. with a short presentation starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by small group discussions. All residents of the Firelands School District are encouraged to come and share their thoughts on the future of the district. Childcare will be provided.
Harris School Book Fair Safari will be held Thursday, Nov. 13 from 3-8 p.m. and will be open during conferences. Members of the Amherst Comets football team will be there from 4:30-6 p.m. to autograph bookmarks and take pictures with students so bring a camera. They will also have the school camera available. The community is invited to assist Brownie Troop #341 and Daisy Troop #580 with a community-wide food drive Nov. 10-14. Items that can be dropped off at St. Joseph's social hall include any non-perishable foods such as flour, sugar, soups, cereals, boxed potatoes, rice, and canned vegetables, along with toiletries, cleaning products, detergents, and paper products. All donations may be dropped off on Friday, Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Joseph's Social Hall. Those who have a business or organization that would like to donate, or if residents need donations picked up, call Misty Kelley at 988-2004 or cometkelleys@aol.com. The Community Thanksgiving Service will be held Sunday, Nov. 23, at 7p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr. This event is sponsored by the Amherst Ministerial Association which includes many Amherst churches. In this service of thanksgiving and praise, the church choirs will be sharing special Thanksgiving music. An offering will be taken for the Amherst Food Pantry, (Good Shepard Baptist Church) and the local Salvation Army unit (Family Fellowship Foursquare Gospel Church). A time for fellowship will follow the service. All are welcome.
The third annual battle of the classes will take place on the football field at Steele High School Thursday, Nov. 20 when Powder Puff Football 2008 takes place. The freshman-sophomore game will kick off at 6 p.m. followed by the junior-senior game. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students. Members of the Steele Marching Band will play throughout the games. The varsity football coaches will referee and the field lines will once again be painted pink.
