Help make a difference
One of the more heartwarming stories we have had in some time involves three retirees who have spent the past three years weeding, planting, mowing, and cleaning different parts of town. These men treasure their community, and want others to enjoy it as much as they do.
Focusing on the entrances to the city, they realize first impressions are lasting impressions. Visitors who are impressed with the appearance of the city as they enter are more likely to want to locate here with their families and businesses.
We would be remiss if we failed to mention the help these men receive from local businesses and tradespeople in transforming run-down areas into beautiful park-like spaces. And they receive some funding from the city and direction from safety-service director Dennis Clotz, but the initiative came from the men themselves.
Perhaps this story is so heartwarming because it is only three men in a city of nearly 12,000. At the same time, it is only three men working to make a difference in a city of nearly 12,000.
True, these men are retired and have more time to devote to community service than those of us who must work. But each of us could contribute an hour or two a week to spruce up the curb lawn or pick up trash at the school yard.
In this time of dwindling city finances, any assistance residents can give in cleaning and beautifying public spaces allows city workers to devote time to other projects. The city is able to maintain a high level of service because residents are doing their part.
We would encourage residents, while the weather is still favorable, to pitch in and help make Amherst more beautiful. An hour or two a week could do wonders -- and maybe give you the bug to continue through the winter, into the spring, and year round.
