Wayne A. Whyte
Wayne A. Whyte, 84, of Amherst, died at Kingston of Vermilion.
Born July 16, 1924, in Amherst, he was a lifetime resident. He graduated from Brownhelm High School and Kent State University, where he earned a master's degree in education.
During World War II, Whyte served in the United States Army, 14th Armored Division under General George Patton in the European Theater.
He was superintendent of Lorain County Public Schools for 19 years before retiring in 1983. After retirement, Whyte was employed at Lakeland Enterprises in Lorain for twenty years. He was also a past president of Amherst city Council.
He was a member of the Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ where he served as a deacon.
He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren and also enjoyed sports as both a participant and as a spectator.
Mr. Whyte is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn L. (nee Kneisel); his daughters, Pamela K. McCourt and her husband William of Vermilion, Constance W. Reinhard and her husband Donald of Geneva, Ill., and Cynthia W. Reighley and her husband Richard of Wellington; his sons, Wayne A. Whyte, Jr., and his wife Mary of Olmsted Township, and Donn L. Whyte of Richfield; his grandchildren Rob and David McCourt, Kathryn and Aaron Reinhard, Sarah Noble, Adam and Emily Reighley, Kendra, Lauren, Amanda and Spencer Whyte; his great-grandson Hunter McCourt; and his sister Donna Pritchett of Wooster. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Edna (nee Warren) Whyte .
Funeral services were Saturday at Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ in Vermilion, the Rev. Elizabeth Terrill officiating. Burial was at Brownhelm Cemetery in Vermilion.
