Police Blotters for July 2
June 11, 2:29 a.m.: Officer Mark Cawthon was on patrol along Nordson Drive when he observed three juveniles riding their bikes.
After stopping and talking with the juveniles, 15- and 16-year-old males were charged with violating curfew. As a result of this charge, they were both cited to the Amherst Police Department's diversion program.
A 14-year-old male was also charged with violating his curfew. However since he had two previous charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespassing, he is scheduled to appear in front of a judge in Lorain County Juvenile Court.
The three juveniles were then released in to the custody of their parents.
June 12, 12:45 a.m.: Officer Michael Rosebeck observed a vehicle being pushed by several juveniles northbound on Leavitt Road.
After initiating a traffic stop, Rosebeck saw one juvenile in the group drop a bag of marijuana on the ground.
After a search of the vehicle, it revealed marijuana shake throughout and four clear plastic bags of marijuana inside the center console under the gear shift.
Two males, 16 and 17 years old, were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were also charged with one count each of violating curfew.
The juveniles were released to a parent.
June 13, 12:49 a.m.: Officer mark Cawthon was on patrol on Leavitt Road near the Amherst Post Office. He observed a white Honda Accord parked at the Spitzer dealership. Since the dealership was closed, Cawthon pulled in to the lot to investigate.
Four juvenile occupants, a 17-year-old female, two 16-year-old males and a 14-year-old male were sitting in the vehicle.
Since three of the juveniles did not have any criminal histories through the Amherst Police Department, Cawthon let them go with only a warning for violating their curfews. Their parents were also notified and lectured on the curfew laws of the city before their children were released to their custody.
One 16-year-old male from Lorain did have numerous encounters with the Amherst Police Department, as well as a prior curfew violation.
He was arrested and taken back to the police department where he was charged with violating his curfew and possession of tobacco products.
A check through LEADS indicated he was entered as missing, by the Lorain Police Department.
He was ordered by Cawthon to appear in Lorain County Juvenile Court to answer those two charges.
After confirming he was listed as missing, Cawthon released the 16-year-old male to the custody of the Lorain Police Department where he was then released to his mother.
June 15, 3:49 a.m.: Officer Devin Small observed a red Toyota Rav 4 traveling northbound on Leavitt Road weaving from side to side. Small also observed the vehicle cross over the double yellow lines several times.
After pulling over the driver, Small arrested the driver, Victor Ortega, of Lorain and charged him with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having a blood alcohol level over .08 percent, weaving the course and marked lanes.
Ortega was released to a friend after posting a $1,300 personal recognizance bond.
June 16, 2:50 p.m.: Officer Troy Donaldson observed a white Mazda traveling eastbound on Cleveland Avenue which had a validation sticker on the rear license plate that did not appear normal.
A check through LEADS showed the license plate had expired on May 13.
After initiating a traffic stop, the driver, Jeffery Koteles was arrested and charged with expired plates, fictitious plates, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Koteles was advised of his court date on July 2 in Oberlin Municipal Court.
June 18, 11:59 p.m.: Officers Perez and Cawthon were dispatched to the area of Maple Street in reference to a small red vehicle that had been observed on the railroad tracks.
According to the 911 caller, the driver had been attempting to exit the tracks on the north side of Maple Street. The caller said when the driver observed her on the phone, the vehicle went back on to the tracks and was then seeing traveling westbound on the tracks.
Officers located the vehicle on the railroad tracks in the area of Milan Avenue, where the driver failed to stop for officers.
The car was then spotted on Crosse Road where officers were finally able to stop the driver.
After an investigation, the driver, Scott Beachler was formally charged with railroad trespass, failure to comply with lawful order/signal, no headlights, a seat belt violation, improper display of license plates, driving under suspension, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and having a blood alcohol level over .08 percent.
He was released on a $5,100 surety bond pending his appearance in Oberlin Municipal Court.
His passenger, Kelly Young, was charged with railroad trespass, wrongful entrustment, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was released after being ordered to appear in Oberlin Municipal Court on July 9.
June 19, 6:36 p.m.: Officer Zackery Horning met with Kelly Novack who informed him someone was cashing her checks.
She told Horning that a few weeks ago she attended a bon fire in Amherst and while she was there, someone stole her purse.
She stated she had a debit card and some checks in her purse and she was able to contact her bank to close those accounts right away.
However despite closing the accounts, she stared receiving notices in the mail about purchases made with her checks.
At this time the suspect is unknown and the investigation continues.
June 20, 1:22 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano was dispatched to the Church Street Bar and Grill in reference to a man selling drugs inside.
Taliano located the man who was later identified as Dominique Thompson of Lorain.
After an investigation by Taliano, Thompson was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct/intoxicated.
June 20, 5:52 p.m.: Officer Kyle Gelenius was dispatched to Aldi's Supermarket on Kresge Drive in reference to a theft complaint.
An unidentified female victim stated when she had finished with her grocery shopping, she mistakenly left her purse in the shopping cart and proceeded to leave the area. On her way home, she realized she didn't have her purse, so she turned around and went back to the store.
When she arrived, someone had turned her purse in to the store manager. However, when she checked to see if everything in her purse was still there, it wasn't.
Someone had stolen nearly $300 in cash, her checkbook and about 10 credit cards.
A report was taken and Gelenius advised the female victim to contact her bank to cancel all her checking and credit card accounts.
Gelenius then attempted to locate any witnesses to the crime, however he was met with negative results. The store manger told Gelenius there was no surveillance video in the parking lot.
There are no known suspects at this time.
June 22, 12:30 a.m.: Officer Mark Cawthon initiated a traffic stop on a silver Lincoln for an equipment violation at the intersection of Cooper Foster Park and Leavitt Roads.
During an investigation, Cawthon noticed various drugs were located in the vehicle.
Three individuals including the driver, Richard A. Kurtz, Jr., was arrested and charged with no license plate light, seven counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, trafficking in marijuana and cocaine, prohibition, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and illegal conveyance of drugs.
His front seat passenger, Brian C. Hall was also arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and prohibition.
A 17-year-old male, who was in the back seat of the vehicle was arrested and charged with two counts of possessing marijuana and violating his curfew.
Their court appearances are pending.
