Police Blotters for Sept. 16

Aug. 25, 10:28 p.m.: Officer Kyle Gelenius talked to a woman at the station in reference to a theft complaint.

The woman said around 9:45 p.m., she drove to Discount Drug Mart, 300 N. Leavitt Rd., and left the windows in her vehicle partially down while she went in to the store. When she came out, she discovered her driver's side door was open.

According to the police report, she told the officer $148 was missing from her purse which she had hidden underneath the front seat and her GPS unit had been taken from the compartment between the driver and passenger seats.

Aug. 26, 1:21 a.m.: Officer Kyle Gelenius observed a blue 2002 Ford Escort traveling southbound on Leavitt Road causing excessive noise due to the vehicle muffler which was in poor working order.

Gelenius conducted a registration check on the vehicle and discovered the driver, Andrea Kistner, had a suspended license.

The officer then conducted a traffic stop on the Rt. 2 eastbound entrance ramp from Leavitt Road.

Kistner was cited for driving under FRA suspension.

Aug. 27, 5:45 a.m.: While officer Michael Murphy was out on a traffic stop, dispatch advised the officer the driver, Rhonda Johnson, had a warrant through the Lorain Police Department for her arrest.

Dispatch proceeded to contact Lorain PD and they advised Johnson had a "confinement of dogs" warrant and her bond had been set at $2,500.

After Murphy told Johns on about the active warrant she said her dog went missing over a year ago and the city's dog warden had picked the dog up. Johnson then paid the fine and also obtained the dog tags.

Johnson was taken in to custody and tuned over to the Lorain police officers by officer Harold White without incident.

Aug. 27, 11:48 p.m.: Officer Michael Taliano initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Leavitt Road and Park Avenue for a violation.

The driver, Jose Guerra, had a suspended license and his passenger, Abel Luciano, was in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Guerra was charged with driving under suspension and failure to drive within marked lanes. Luciano was also arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and wrongful entrustment.

Aug. 28, 7:41 a.m.: Detective Alex Molnar was dispatched to Marion L. Steele High School, 450 Washington St., regarding a student who was receiving harassing text messages on his cell phone.

Molnar met with principal Mike Gillam who confirmed the complaint. Molnar saw six messages were received. He concluded the messages were not of a threatening nature, but could be construed as harassing.

Aug. 28, 11:10 p.m.: Officer Michael Taliano initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Jose Veliz after witnessing several traffic violations. Taliano determined Veliz was driving with a suspended license and had an active warrant for his arrest through the Lorain County Sheriff's Department.

He was charged with driving under suspension, having no license plate light and not signaling. Veliz was later released in to the custody of a sheriff's deputy for the warrant.

Aug. 28, 11:20 p.m.: Sergeant Mark Cawthon was dispatched to a home on Jackson Street in reference to an assault which had taken place downtown around 10:40 p.m. that evening.

Cawthon met with the two juvenile males and one of their grandmothers. According to the juvenile victims, one of them was assaulted by a man while walking on Park Avenue. The incident is under investigation.

Aug. 29, 2:39 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano radioed to officer Devin Small he was following a silver Doge Stratus northbound on Leavitt Road. Taliano said the driver, Jennifer Henderson, was weaving.

As Small approached the vehicle, he activated his lights and siren and he was able to get Henderson to pull over on the Rt. 2 eastbound ramp from Leavitt Road.

Henderson was charged with OVI, having a blood alcohol level over the .08 percent state legal limit, marked lanes and weaving the course.

Aug. 30, 12:12 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano was driving through the Motel 6 parking lot when he overheard a male causing a disturbance.

The man, who was later identified as James Harold, was found to be intoxicated and in possession of marijuana.

Harold was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct while intoxicated.

Aug. 30, 12:47 a.m.: Officer Luther Smith was dispatched to Albright Terrace, 129 Milan Ave., in reference to a suspicious vehicle located in the back parking lot.

Smith spoke with a security officer who made the complaint. He said he observed two males sitting in a black vehicle. When he went to confront the pair, he observed a very small blunt instrument in the driver's hand and decided to contact police instead.

As officers approached and spoke with the 17-year-old driver, he confessed to having marijuana in a book bag located in the back seat of this car.

Smith located the book bag and found marijuana, the prescription drug Adderal, as well as drug paraphernalia.

The driver and his 17-year-old passenger were then taken in to custody. The juvenile driver was charged with tampering with drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. His juvenile passenger was charged with possession of marijuana and drug abuse.

Both juveniles males were the released to their parents pending an appearance in Lorain County Juvenile Court.

Aug. 31, 8:11 p.m.: Officer Josh McCoy was dispatched to a residence on Sands Avenue regarding a female who was bitten by a dog.

She told the officer she was in her backyard when her next door neighbor brought her nephew's dog, which was an American bulldog puppy.

As the neighbor got closer, the complainant became more and more afraid. She then made a swatting motion toward the dog which caused it to bit her right thigh.

The officer was assured by the neighbor's nephew -- who owned the dog -- it had its shots by the former owner, but he would attempt to locate proof.

McCoy advised him after his report was complete, it would be forwarded to the Lorain County Board of Health.

The dog was then taken to his grandmother's house after the incident occurred and would be quarantined as required.

Sept. 1, 8 p.m.: Officer Troy Donaldson was dispatched to the police department's front lobby for a harassment complaint.

The officer spoke with a woman who said her ex-boyfriend, Joan Melendez, would not leave her alone. After speaking with both parties, it was clear to Donaldson Melendez was at fault and it was determined charges against him were necessary.

The female signed charges against Melendez of domestic violence, aggravated menacing and telecommunications harassment. Donaldson also filed an order of protection on behalf of the complainant who the officer described in his report as "obviously scared of Melendez."

A warrant was issued for his arrest.

Sept. 2, 10:45 p.m.: Officer Troy Donaldson was dispatched to Church Street Bar & Grille, 300 Church St., in reference to a male refusing to leave. The caller also told dispatch the man even assaulted a patron and was running from the scene.

Donaldson spotted the male, identified as Russell Hamner, running north on Church Street. The officer ordered him to stop, but he refused. According to the police report, an altercation ensued where Donaldson had to use his taser to control and handcuff Hamner.

He was charged with disorderly conduct while intoxicated, criminal damaging, resisting arrest, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, persisting and disturbing the peace.

Due to his intoxicated state, Hamner was transported to Community Health Partners in Lorain for treatment.

Sept. 3, 2:54 a.m.: Officer Devin Small observed the driver of a blue Cadillac DeVille turn into the Faith Baptist Church parking lot and proceed to park his vehicle along the north side of the building.

The officer briefly waited in the Amherst Police Department's parking lot waiting to see if the driver was turning around.

According to a police report, Small decided to drive to the church parking lot. When the driver, Michael Lee saw this, he entered his vehicle and drove out of the parking lot and proceeded north on North Lake Street, all the while weaving from side to side.

Small attempted to initiate a traffic stop on North Lake Street near the Rt. 2 overpass, but Lee kept driving. Small activated his siren and got Lee to pull over in an office park across from Lowe's. After the officer was finished conducting his investigation, Lee was placed in handcuffs and charged with OVI, DUS, state refusal and weaving the course.

Sept. 6, 1:38 a.m.: Officer Michael Taliano initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle after the officer found out the driver had a suspended license. Taliano also found the driver, Willie White, Jr., to be in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

White was charged with driving under suspension, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless operation.

Sept. 7, 2:35 a.m.: Sergeant Mark Cawthon was on patrol along North Leavitt Road when he saw a white Mercury topaz traveling southbound without lights. Cawthon initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle.

During the stop, Cawthon also utilized his K9 partner Bandit to sniff the vehicle for drugs.

The driver, Joshua Morris, was cited for having no headlights, while his passenger, Adam Smith, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sept. 7, 9:01 a.m.: Detective Alex Molnar was dispatched to a residence on Forest Hills Drive in reference to items missing from a vehicle parked in the driveway.

The complainant stated one of two vehicles parked in his driveway overnight were entered by someone. He discovered the door ajar and miscellaneous items missing inside.

Sept. 8, 12:45 p.m.: Officer Michael Taliano was dispatched to the Sunoco gas station, 7580 N. Leavitt Rd., regarding a suspicious vehicle. The officer located the driver, Abdul Giles, who was found to be in possession of drugs. A search of the vehicle yielded a large amount of money stashed underneath the hood of his vehicle.

Giles was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Taliano also seized the money. Additional charges are pending following the results from the Lorain County crime lab.
