* July 14: The Homerun Financial Spartans finished the 2008 season as champions with the Dodge Slimans Wildcats both finishing with a 10-2 record. Coach David J. Moore was assisted by Jeff Jones and Dan Kordeleski. The team had a fantastic season losing only two games. The team consisted of Jessica Moore, Olivia Cruz, Katie Kukucka, Lexi Jones, Taylor Gibson, Marigold Petkovsek, Jessica Whitman, Cassidi Pullin, Hannah Kordeleski, Sydnie Mullins and Alyssa Strauser. Congratulations!

* July 16: The Raiders defeated the Buckeyes by a score of 9-7. Raiders with two or more hits include McKenzie Auvil and Maggie Manges; and winning pitchers was Maggie Manges, save by Lauren Farley. Buckeyes with two or more hits includes Jordon Hall. Buckeye pitcher Charlotte Boden held the Raiders to one run over the first two innings while the Buckeyes scored four. By the top of the fourth inning, the Buckeyes were ahead 5-2. In the fourth, the Buckeyes loaded the bases off Raider pitcher Maggie Manges with two hits and a walk. After going 3-0 on the next Buckeye batter, Maggie Manges threw three straight strikes to strike out the batter and then struck out the next two batters on six pitches. In their half of the fourth inning, the Raiders came back with three runs to tie the game after a single by Mackenzie Auvil, a walk to Holly Lamb and a single by Maggie Manges. All three Raiders went on to score, tying the game at five a piece after four. Maggie Manges struck out the side in the top of the fifth to hold the score to 5-5. In the bottom of the fifth, the Raiders scored four times when Sarah Winrod tripled after two walks and Mackenzie Auvil and Maggie Manges both hit RBI singles. Lauren Farley came on to close the game in the top of the sixth. The Buckeyes scored two runs after Toni Elliot and Jordon Hall smashed balls to the fence for doubles. Raider left fielder Holly Lamb chased one of the hits down and made an excellent throw to shortstop Carly Richardson who threw a strike to third-baseman Sarah Winrod for an out at third to stop the Buckeye comeback. Lauren Farley went on to retire the last Buckeye on a grounder to first base for the save. Of the five games played between the Raiders and the Buckeyes this season, four have been decided in the last at-bat and by two runs or less. Both the Raiders and the Buckeyes are young teams, which ensures the rivalry will continue in 2009.

* July 16: The Veard Construction Lions (5-8) took on the Sliman's Dodge Wildcats (10-3) for the girls Major Championship. Both teams displayed the 100 percent effort you'd expect to see in a championship game as Wildcats Maddie Swint and Alyseea Gillespie made diving outfield catches and Lions catcher Shannon Sfero made a tough tag out at home plate. Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fifth, the underdog Lions roared at bat and pushed across 13 runs in the last three innings to upset the Wildcats 15-10. Leading the offensive charge for the Lions were Katelyn Pittman (4 hits, double), Shannon Sfero (3 hits, double), Gina Januzzi (2 doubles), and Sarah Walters (2 hits), while Sam Piwkowski, Katie Gleason, and Lexie Jones delivered clutch hits to keep Lions rallies alive. Lions pitcher Sarah Walters stopped a sixth inning Wildcats comeback rally by striking out three straight batters with a runner on third and nobody out on the way to tossing her second complete game of the playoffs. The hard hitting Wildcats were led with two hits from Savannah Farley, Danielle Wieglicki, Natlie Swift, and Maddie Swint. Congratulations to Lions players Sarah Walters, Sam Piwkowski, Shannon Sfero, Katelyn Pittman, Gina Januzzi, Brooke Baldwin, Katie Gleason, Arielle Del Turco, Leigha Radcliffe, and Hannah and Heather Brosky for achieving upset wins over both league co-champions to win the playoffs.
