The Steele High School girls cross country team competed in the SWC Championships Saturday at Lorain County Community College.

State ranked Brecksville scored 22 points to lead the conference. Avon Lake (84) was second, followed by Olmsted Falls (87), Amherst (94), North Olmsted (105), Berea (160), Midpark (170), and Westlake (198).

Junior Kasey Schuler led Amherst in Saturday's championships, finishing 14th (21:15) to earn All-SWC honors. She was followed by Sarah Walters (15th, 21:20), Erica Kelly (19th, 21:36), Devan Molnar (22th, 21:52), Emily Johnson (24th, 21:55), Nina Hill (25th, 22:04), and Ali Pittak (28th, 22:13).

The Comets junior varsity finished second in the SWC Championships Saturday. Brecksville scored 20, followed by Amherst with 49 points, Olmsted Falls with 86, and North Olmsted with 95 points. Berea, Avon Lake, Olmsted Falls, and Midpark all had incomplete teams.

Senior Abbie Hornyak finished first overall in the SWC open race (21:39) to pace the Lady Comets. Sophomore Katie Sooy-Schultz (12th, 23:06) was next for Amherst, followed by Becki Stuckart (13th, 23:09), Alison Gillam (17th, 23:20), Heather Brosky (25th, 23:47), Emma McGuire (26th, 23:54), Amanda Wymer (27th, 24:03), Megan Borgsteadt (30th, 24:05), Cami Forbush (38th, 24:36), Julia Scrofano (42nd, 24:40), Kelsey Anderson (48th, 25:25), Alexandra Jones (50th, 25:30), Lexie Jones (79th, 31:16), and Caitlin Fessler (80th, 31:46). Junior Cami Forbush was the runner of the week, cutting almost 30 seconds from her season best in spite of the mud and low temperatures for Saturday's race.

The girls record now stands at 85-21 as they head into District Competition this weekend at LCCC. The varsity girls will be racing at 1:50 p.m., with the Open race scheduled to begin at approximately 3:50 p.m. Sixteen teams compete in the District Meet, with the top six teams and top 24 individuals advancing to the Regional Meet at Tiffin.
