120 years ago

1888

Burglars went through the C.S &C depot at Green Springs on Sunday and the depots of that road and the Pennsylvania road in Tiffin next day, securing but a small amount of money, however.

A cage containing two blood sucking vampires was transferred at the U.S. Express Office, Clyde, last Saturday night, enroute from New York to Huntsville.

Jacob Metzgar, of Green Creek, bitten on the left arm by a vicious horse. Tuesday of last week, is in critical condition, recovery being far from assured as yet.

1898

Among the war taxes imposed were: bankers, $50; managers of theatres, $100; managers of shows for money, $10; bowling alley or billiard parlors, $5 each table or alley; dealers in leaf tobacco, $6; dealers whose sale of tobacco exceeds 50,000 pounds, $12; manufacturers of cigars and tobacco, $6.

1918

Herman Sultz was thrown off his motorcycle on Buckeye Street enroute home. He had his arm skinned and his clothes torn and some damage was done to his machine.

Herman Lidke of Vickery was taken to a hospital in Sandusky with a broken shoulder and other injuries when his team ran away and threw him off a load of hay as he entered the barn.

As Rolla Lea drove his horse and buggy from Birdseye Street onto State Street, his rig was struck by the eastbound electric car. The buggy was demolished, but the horse escaped without injury. Mr. Lea jumped from the buggy when he saw it would be hit and escaped injury.

Frank Beebe started a fire in his chicken house in order to kill the chicken lice. It killed the lice but the fire department arrived too late to save the building.

1928

A carelessly thrown firecracker was responsible for the loss of approximately $500 worth of merchandise and damage done to the interior of the T.G. Lisle store on July 3. The firecracker was thrown in the open doorway and burning paper blew into the window piled with fireworks which were immediately set off.

70 years ago

1938

Norma Jean, 11 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fultz, received a bad cut on the back of her head when the bicycle she was riding collided with a car driven by Mrs. Ray Shellhammer.

Miss Mary Walden of West Buckeye Street was admitted to Memorial Hospital, Fremont, with a broken left leg which she sustained in a fall.

Clyde Village council approved the purchase of a traffic light for the corner of Main and Buckeye Streets.

Mrs. D.E. Fuller, Mrs. W.A. Galpin and three grandchildren, Margaret, Lois and Emily Sayles, Mrs. B.F. Jackson, Jr., Ralph Trump and daughter, Betty Mae, made a trip on the last Big Four train to Sandusky and returned to Clyde on the last train on the road to leave Sandusky. The single coach on the train was filled with passengers from all up and down the line, who rode on the historical last trip on the line.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herkes; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ott and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Franks.

Local deaths reported were: Andrew C. Clemons; Harold LeRoy Perrin; Charles R. Perrin; and Bobby Hughes.

1948

Edward Knowles of Green Creek Township, son of Charles Knowles, was in a critical condition in Memorial Hospital, Fremont, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

The body of Sgt. Robert A. Dickman killed in World War II, was brought from England for burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Keegan, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hughes, Master Sgt. and Mrs. Lewis McClure, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Snyder and Mr. and Mrs. John Sanford; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Andres; and twins, a girl and boy to Mr. and Mrs. Juan Gonzales.

Local deaths reported were: Fred M. Haff; William Henry Ferkel; Mrs. John E. Miller; Mrs. Carl M. Smith; Mrs. Jacob (Anna Ginnever) Burkhart, 74; Otto J. Stahl; Elmer L. Signs; William Schaberg, 79; Mrs. Mary Heckman, 87; and R.W. Hiner.

50 years ago

1958

A horse owned by Clarence Stetler, 129 W. McPherson Highway, got loose and galloped over village streets, yards, gardens and fences, leading Patrolman Marvin "Red" Scherz a merry chase. Stetler, on a second horse, finally captured the runaway on Limerick Road south of town.

Unveiling of a new monument honoring Seneca John took place north of Green Springs. The monument was reset and a bronze plaque affixed.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. George Becker, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hartzel, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Eishen, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Norris and Mr. and Mrs. William LuAllen; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. John Nearhood; and twin daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bilbrey.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. O.C. Willis, 68; mrs. Wayne Cleveland, 59; and Carl Brutcher, 61.

1968

Green Springs residents expressed interest in transferring their property to Clyde School District at a public meeting.

Clyde board of Education passed a resolution to put a bond issue on the November ballot for the purpose of constructing a swimming pool.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dendinger and Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Estep; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dugger, Mr. and Mrs. Juan Garza, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adams, Mr. and Mrs. D. Thomas Storer, Mr. and Mrs. Juan Valdz and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Gressman.

1978

Harold Kramer, a 20 year veteran with the Clyde Police Department, was named Police Chief by City Manager James McFellin.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. William Bordner, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Day, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Fultz and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Crum; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Steve Adams and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ryman.

1988

Mayor Patrick Wadsworth ended 11 years as Mayor of Clyde with his resignation. He and his wife, Jan, were moving outside of city limits to a log cabin they built.

Clyde was trying to extend toll-free phone service to Bellevue and Fremont.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Darr and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Legg; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Peters; and twins to Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Ruffing.

Local deaths reported were: James Mann, 76; Coy Bullard, 58; Mrs. Herman, (Ceola M. Lyon) Meinke, 71; and Mrs. Ralph P. (Ruby G. Garn) Engle, 88.

1998

A new law went into effect for new teen driver's. Teen turning 15 1/2 on or after July 1, can obtain a temporary driving permit. Youths must drive with a license driver age 21 or older.

Local deaths reported were: Florence L. Chidley, 96; Elmer E. Martin, 82; and Barbara Cooper, 56.

The clock is now ticking on a $54-million, Ohio School Facilities Commission rebuild and renovation plan for the local school district. The school board also has a 1.5-mill, five-year permanent improvement replacement levy on a special Aug. 7 ballot. The same levy failed in May.
