1888

The May Festival of St. Mary's Church last evening was a decided success. Over $100 was realized. The gold watch was drawn by Mr. Winfield Adair.

Thursday, June 7th, the Class of '88 will graduate from Clyde High School. The class numbers 10 members, four young gentlemen and six young ladies.

110 years ago

1898

Mrs. R.B. Jones was in Cleveland undergoing treatment for her eyes.

Harry Heffner was on crutches, the result of a sprained ankle.

Harmon Hock fell and broke a leg.

Joseph Jordan, 62, died at his home southeast of Clyde.

Engineer F.A. Mason of the waterworks was ill at his home.

Mrs. Denton Deyo died at her home on Amanda Street.

90 years ago

1918

A government marker was received for the grave of Dr. W.H. Brown of Clyde, who died in 1899, and was buried in McPherson Cemetery. Eaton Post, GAR received the marker and placed it on the grave.

Miss Etta Gordon fell down stairs at her home and badly bruised her knee and sprained her ankle.

J.F. Stine purchased a 6-cylinder Buick. Fred Skilliter purchased a Dodge car and his son Tom performed a number of remarkable stunts with the new machine.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Emery; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Brady.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. J.B. Sampsel; Cyrus Thompson; and Uriah Stauffer.

80 years ago

1928

Ed Rohdes of Fremont opened a retail store, Clyde Cut Rate Store, in a room in the Whaley Block on N. Main St.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Beier; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Rosella Lewis) Vollmer.

William R. Long, owner of Nichols Inne and Wayside Inne, died.

1938

Emma Rule Metzger, 73, widow of Franklin Metzger, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Matz, south of Clyde.

One-hundred chickens were reported stolen at the Paul Lowe home on South Main Street.

Miss Betty Heffner arrived home from Baltimore, Md., where she had been for several months undergoing four plastic surgery operations.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hartley; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Ray.

60 years ago

1948

Mrs. Arthur Whitcomb was called to Monroe, Mich., by word of serious injuries received by her father W.B. Peterson of Fremont, in an automobile accident near Monroe.

Edward Raschke of Duane Street was taken to Memorial Hospital at Fremont to recuperate from severe burns to his right arm and side suffered when he fell asleep while smoking in bed.

Funeral services were held for Leo Perin, popular proprietor of the Clyde Bowling Center.

1958

Frank Mason, 99, was elected an honorary member of the Sandusky County Historical Society.

Sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Don Humberger, Mr. and Mrs. Dale C. Gilbert, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Ernsberger, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Perry, Mr. and Mrs. William Rohrbacher, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Long.

Local deaths reported were: W. Carl Brugger, 73; Dr. W.F. Chapin, 71; Henry C. Hodgkinson, 82; and Janet Foster, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Foster.

1968

It was reported that Tim Snyder was wounded in Vietnam.

Al Wright, who was seriously injured in a nine car accident Feb. 17 on the New York Thruway was brought home from Columbus in the Mitchell-Auxter ambulance. He had been fitted with a body cast in preparation for the trip home.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lynch, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Clark; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mason, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Good, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Michaels and Mr. and Mrs. LaMar House.

Local deaths reported were: William A. Craig, 86; George Rogers, Sr., 69; and Walter F. Schrickel, 69.

Mary Jackson Gibbs, 73, former co-owner of The Enterprise, died at her Florida home.

The Robert Craig memorial bell was moved from school property to the Veteran's Section of McPherson Cemetery.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Tarris, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy L. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. John Yaggy and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Salazar; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Gullett and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hill.

Local deaths reported were: Clement M. Mroczkowski, 78; and George E. Mohn, 64.

A 45-unit elderly housing complex was being discussed for behind Winesburg Inn.

Robert Dietz and the late Frances Dietz were chosen for the Clyde Exchange Club's "Book of Golden Deeds" for outstanding service to the community.

Clyde Rosettes Grandmothers Club celebrated 20 years with a dinner at Green Hills Inn.

Sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kochendoerger, Spec. 4 and Mrs. Raymond Bailey and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rhine.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Donald (Dorothy J. Haley) Clark, 61; Donald L. Lee, 63; Merton Gardner, 81; Burte J. Nicely, Sr., 66; Russell Gillett, 57; and Mrs. Harley (Annie) Boyd, 87.

Clyde Police arrested 10 adults and four juveniles in a citywide drug sting on May 19. Arrested were Victoria S. Mensch, 44; Raymond Brooks, 19; Timothy A. Cooper, 39; Jason C. Wax, 20; Kurt R. Miller, 30; William W. Chaffee, 30; Scott B. LeMaitre, 18; Daniel Noftz, 18; Daniel Brown, 40; and Jerry Evans, 48, a Clyde High School social studies teacher.

A daughter was born to Jeremiah Mannor and Tara Lyn Pocock-Haubert; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Mark O'Donnell.

Local deaths reported were: Granville Clifford Kirkwood, 83; and IvaGrace Ellen Barber, 73.

2007

Todd and Joanne Bower broke ground on May 17 for a new joint business location at 1422 and 1430 W. McPherson Highway. The Bowers will be moving Bower CPA from Duane Street and Hall's Garden Gate market from East McPherson Highway to a new 6,000 square foot facility.

One of the largest Clyde High School classes in more than a decade was approved for graduation at the school board meeting. The board of education also approved a drug testing policy and put a permanent improvement levy on the summer ballot. On the upcoming graduation, Superintendent Todd Helms said with 191 members, the Class of 2007 is the largest to graduate since the early 1990s.
