120 years ago

1888

Mr. Benj. Mook has in course of construction a new barn on Maple Street. Jno. Bell is the builder.

Piety Hillers are noted for their ingenious turn of mind, and it applies to fishing, as well as other vocations. The latest has been successfully accomplished by our neighbor Silas Leach, of Vine Street, accompanied by his son, Zenos.

They hiked to the raging Raccoon after fish, but not meeting with the desired success, Mr. Leach concluded to dive for them, the law not prohibiting this manner of procuring them; so in he goes, and but for the timely assistance of his son it would have been his last dive.

Strange to say, when he got home he found a sucker in each pocket of his rubber coat.

90 years ago

1918

Raymond Sheely had a tine of a fork run through his hand while at work at the Universal Paper Products factory.

Louis Schrader, N.Y.C. section hand, had his knee bumped by the speeder and as a result suffered from blood poisoning.

While in swimming Allan McCleary cut his foot so badly that a doctor was called to sew up the gash.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Altice Draime and Mr. and Mrs. Clark F. Hackenburg; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Matter.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Euphemia Ramsey Coombs; Mrs. Mary Holloway; Mrs. Martha Hayman; Edward Falquette; and Israel Lease.

80 years ago

1928

At the Clyde Grange meeting, Samuel Persing gave a talk on the early days of the grange, noting that Clyde Grange was the oldest grange in point of service in the state, having been organized in 1874. The first Master was Taylor Perrin and Overseer was Mark Tichener.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hoover.

Local deaths were: Jacob Fifer, Civil War veteran; and Mrs. Eva Wysong.

1938

Mr. and Mrs. Dell Payne of north of Clyde discovered their home had been robbed when they returned after a 10-day absence. A kitchen door was forced to gain entrance. Stolen articles included a table cover, mattress, bed spread, about 75 dishes, 5 quarts of sausage and a bolt of curtain material.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chelcer Tressler; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bookmyer.

Local deaths reported were: Murray J. McDougall, Sr.; and Harold Langton.

60 years ago

1948

Lester Hackenburg Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hackenburg of South Ridge, was informed that he was one of the successful candidates for the State Farmer degree in the Ohio Future Farmers.

The new entrance to historic McPherson Cemetery was being completed.

The project was undertaken because Jesse Beard designated $1,150 to be used for the new gateway in her will.

Fire caused approximately $1,800 damage in the Albert Lee apartments on the east side of North Main Street.

Daughter's were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Leber, Mr. and Mrs. Lester McKee, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lamson and Mr. and Mrs. Milton German; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raypole, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McClory, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond F. Cloud, Mr. and Mrs. John Meggitt, Mr. and Mrs. William Dirlam and Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Lachotski.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Carrie L. Drown; Mrs. Evadne L. Chapin; Engle B. Schell; and Mrs. Anna E. Carter.

1958

A new section, measuring 300 feet in length, was installed by the Ohio Fuel Gas Co. on SR 510 to replace the section of the main gas feed line to Clyde that was destroyed in an explosion.

Lawrence A. Dickman, 70, Chief of the Clyde Police Department for 18 years, resigned his position, effective June 1.

Clyde firemen were called to the Herman Fowler residence, 402 Vine Street, when lightning struck the home, causing considerable damage.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Branham; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Oberst, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Nieset, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Garvin.

Local deaths reported were: Arthur F. Altvater, 75; Mrs. Lena Meyer, 82; Mrs. Eva Bell Jennings, 82; and LaMar Russell Jones, 72.

1968

Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Drown began work as the new bookkeeper in The Enterprise office.

Glen Giffen received Clyde Exchange Club's Book of Golden Deeds.

The newly repainted and refurbished 1920 Clydesdale fire truck was on display at Camie's Restaurant on Route 20.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Gillmor; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. David Hudson and Mr. and Mrs. Michael McPherson.

Local deaths reported were: Mrs. Jacob (Esther Wiedle) Lentz, 72; infant Peggy Stevens; Robert Conrad, 45; Dale E. 1978

Legislation passed by City Council named Friday, May 19, as Vilas Gamble's last day at City Manager. Service Director Brad Biggs was to serve as acting manager until a new man was appointed.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rick Steiner; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Patrick, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Baptista, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Craig, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald K. Heckel and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Daughtery.

Jack Bango, Duane Street, caught a 12 1/2 pound, 29 1/2 inch catfish in Fremont's South Creek.

Sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Orval Barnes and Doug Horsley and Jeri Miller.

Local deaths reported were: Alfred Hall, 57; Mrs. James S. (N. Lorene Kilgore) Drown, 47; and Kenneth "Jeep" Rohlf, 43.

1998

It was announced that Seneca County Sheriff H. Weldin Neff and campaign supporter Dennis Smith would be going to trial on June 25 and 26 on one charge each of menacing by stalking.

Clyde City Council was looking at spending $50,000 to purchase three new disaster sirens for the city and improve that system.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Stockmaster; and sons to Mr. and Mrs. Marc Slingwine and Mr. and Mrs. William Colavincenzo.

Local deaths reported were: Charles Swartz, 58; Scott Jenkins, 38; and Dwight Aichholz, 73.

2007

Two 30-plus year fourth grade teachers will be leaving South Main Elementary School to retire this week.

The elementary school will be losing Dan Branstrator and Millie Harrison. Both instructors say they long have enjoyed teaching their grade and being hallmates.

A Clyde man pled guilty to 12 counts of aggravated arson and arson and then was sentenced to nine years in state prison in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court. Justin Chill, 26, sat before Judge James Sherck and admitted to starting a dozen fires in the Clyde area between February and September 2006.

The defendant was already serving time in state prison on a probation violation for Erie County.
