Garden club members attend conference

Pat Gill welcomed 13 members of the Clyde Garden Club into her home for the May 22 meeting.

President Carol Lobdell led the group in the Conservation Pledge and reported on the OAGC Region 6 Conference held in Norwalk.

Pearl Schwochow, Frances Sinclair and Pat Gill also attended the conference.

The April minutes were read by secretary Patty Jean Storer and approved. Treasurer Peggy Watt reported no new activity in the treasury.

Members were pleased to learn that many old slides of garden club activities had been found and discussed ways of preserving them.

Mary Jane Dawes discussed Winesburg Weekend and encouraged club involvement.

The bird report was given by Pearl Schwochow, who told about the double-crested cormorant.

Eilene Perry discussed the loss of hemlock trees in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park due to smog.

The program "rhododendrons and peonies" was presented by Frances Sinclair. Sinclair shared many pictures of several varieties.

A few of the references used were: Botanica's Trees and Shrubs; All About Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendrons by Ortho; Peonies by Pamela McGeorge; and Carefree Plants by Reader's Digest.

Refreshments of coconut cream pie and butterscotch pie were served by the hostess.

On June 26, the club will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Lutheran church parking lot to travel to Sandra Kessler's garden and to Rosebud Cottage in Green Springs for lunch.
