Government

involvement

a big plus

Letter to Editor,

This is in response to your editorial July 1, in which you have bemoan government involvement in business.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan said that government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem. And so began an era of anti-government laisses fairy zealotry that saw the dismantling of regulatory machinery and oversight that could have prevented today's economic chaos.

The corporate free-enterprise greedheads, who were focused only on huge short-term profits took over, leaving us with companies now deemed "too big to fail."

Now the government is forced to step in, in order to save millions of Americans from destitution.

You also stated that we face the possibility of being treated in federally operated hospitals. I've not heard about that one. Perhaps you were thinking of federal involvement in health insurance, which many folks favor.

I would far rather have people elected by me making decisions about my health care than the profit-seeking private insurance companies.

In short, all these issues that you decry are a direct consequence of the conservative right-wing political philosophy which so many in our community espouse. I suppose we get just what we deserve.
