The center point of this weekend's Independence Day celebration in Clyde may not be the $15,000 in fireworks slated to be shot off on Saturday night over Community Park and the Raccoon Creek Reservoir.
Clyde Recreation director Aaron Wilson said most of the questions he has been getting have been about the weekend's celebration have been about the city's newest attraction - the Clyde Aquatic Center.
"The pool is amazing," he commented.
At the old pool in Clyde, tradition had it that admission was free on the day the city celebrated Independence Day. This year, Clyde will celebrate on Saturday, July 5 with games, tournaments and fire works in Community Park.
"The pool is going to be free for the day," Wilson said before discussing the other events planned for the day. The new zero-entry pool with two 28-foot water slides will be open Saturday, July 5 from noon to 6 p.m. The normal daily admission price is $4 a person.
"We will be doing games," he said, noting that the lifeguards and staff are working on new games related to the pools new design. But Wilson said there could still be a greased watermelon game on tap as was popular in the old pool.
For those who will not be in the pool Saturday, at 10 a.m. there will be a volleyball tournament, which is open to any team. Call 419-547-6205 to pre-register the team. There will be a DJ in the park in the early evening.
Cornhole tournament for families and groups will start at 7 p.m. for families.
Jonathan Burkin, who was featured on America's Got Talent, will perform his fire baton routine at 9:45 p.m. in the park right before the fireworks.
Wilson said there also will be children's games on the south ball diamond at 7 p.m. Games will include dodge ball, tug-o-war, water balloon toss and others.
A car show will be held in Community Park 7 to 9 p.m. Registration will be 5 to 7 p.m. with a $5 fee. For more information call 419-547-9741.
"The concession stands will be open. Little League will be making hamburgers," he added. The Recreation Department will bring back the bounce houses, which were popular in 2007.
