OUPS - you missed one

A block around Clyde High School was sealed off by local firefighters after a gas line was ruptured during construction on Monday afternoon at 4:10 p.m.

Within 20 minutes, Columbia Gas shut off the line and traffic was allowed to flow around the high school facility again.

Superintendent Todd Helms reported gas to CHS would be off at least until Tuesday while the line was repaired, but noted with the building closed gas usage was at a minimum.

The line was ruptured during construction on a drainage area for the new Bishop Stadium artificial turf project.

A contractor hit the 6-inch gas line going to the high school, which was buried in the fire vehicle parking area just on the east side of the stadium fence by the Race Street parking area.

Ryan Greenslade, who has been working to coordinate the turf project, reported that the line was not marked by the utility company. He said that the utility was not sure where the main line to the high school was located and was on hand in case there was an accident.

Athletic Director Bob Bishop, who also is working on the turf project with the Flier Football Foundation, reported OUPS, the Ohio Utilities Protection Service had been asked to mark all utilities.

"OUPS has been out here four times," he said, noting volunteers and staff took all possible precautions when digging.
