Besides approving a temporary budget for 2009-10 on Monday night, the Clyde-Green Springs school board also approved the purchase of $272,873 in new textbooks.
At the regular month board meeting, treasurer Alan Binger asked the board to make final appropriations for the ending Fiscal Year 2009 and to approve a temporary FY 2010 budget.
"Right now we have a negative fund," he told the school board, noting that is unusual. Binger explained that the building fund is $35 million in debt with the new school construction as the district had not yet received the money.
He added the auditors would have to deal with the debt issue. The total appropriations for FY 09 are $31,850,883. The temporary for FY 2010 is set at 459,455,483, with the general fund set at about half of what will be spent or $9,811,189.
Assistant superintendent Laura Kagy reviewed the request to purchase $272,873 in new reading-language arts textbooks for grades kindergarten through twelfth.
The SRA Imagine It books for grades kindergarten through fifth grades will cost $176,454, while the Glencoe books and curriculum for sixth through senior years will cost $96,418.
"There are a lot of technology pieces in both of these programs," Kagy told the board.
The elementary reading program includes interaction for the students with computers and clickers, she said.
"The Glencoe is the secondary program. In technology, it's very strong. They have access to the textbook and workbook online," according to Kagy. Students who have Internet service at home and who may forget their books can no longer avoid their homework, she noted.
Stories can also be downloaded for Ipod listening.
The online version of the book allows for students to highlight areas online and write in the web book.
A user identification and password will be required to use the system. The district is also purchasing CDs of the new books for students who do not have online access so programs can be downloaded on home computers, she said.
Kagy added that teachers have spent many hours determining which books to purchase for reading and English.
Also on Monday night, the school board approved the 2009-10 student-parent handbooks for all school buildings except South Main School, which will be presented in July.
The board also honored 23-year custodian Robert Wilkerson, who has retired. Wilkerson received a plaque, school bell and activities pass.
