The Lady Fliers volleyball team was unexspectantly shocked from the Division II Sectional Volleyball Tournament Oct. 21, at Norwalk High School by Perkins.
The Lady Fliers had already dispatched the Pirates three times this season - twice in the Sandusky Bay Conference and once at the Norwalk Invitational.
The Pirates prevailed in five games 25-20, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25 and 15-13 in the hard fought match to advance to play Norwalk. The Lady Fliers were the number two seed in the tournament and end the season at 16-7.
Lainey Barnett had 20 kills, 13 points and eight digs to lead the Lady Fliers. Jamie Hoppe had 17 kills, 14 points and 11 digs. Bridgette Setzler led the team with 40 assists and Tara Humbert had a team high 25 digs.
Alesha Dickman had nine kills, Kaylea Griffin had six kills and Rachael Smetzler had five kills and four points.
"I am obviously very disappointed with the outcome of the match tonight," Coach Kelly Olson said.
"Perkins came out tonight ready to play. Their defense was just outstanding, and they were digging up everything that we hit at them.
"My girls played with a lot of heart, and they had a great season.
"We were 16-7 overall and 11-3 in the SBC," she added.
"They came a long way from last year when they were 6-8 in the SBC, so they can be proud of what they accomplished this year. I look forward to working with the returning girls next year and I wish good luck to my seniors."
