Arbor Day Celebration 2008

The Village of Oak Harbor held its annual Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, May 2, 2008. Due to inclement weather the ceremony which was originally planned to be held at the Town Hall Park was quickly moved to the meeting room at the police station.

Mayor Fred Conley read the Arbor Day Proclamation.

The guest speaker was Carol Benner from the Soil and Water Conservation District who gave a short talk on the importance of trees in our environment.

Every year the Tree Commission dedicates the planting of a tree to a special person or cause.

This year the Village Tree Commission dedicated the tree to the memory of Sgt. Keith Kline. The memorial tree that was planted was at 4 inch Burr Oak planted in front of the log cabin and will stand as a tribute to the sacrifice that Sgt. Kline made for his country. This beautiful tree was made possible by the generous donations of many Oak Harbor merchants.

The Arbor Day celebration had originally been planned to include the combined 4th and 5th grade class of St. Boniface School and the 5th graders form R.C. Waters Elementary School, however the students were able to participate in the ceremony because of the bad weather.

The annual Arbor Day Poetry contest winners were announced: Cade Schuchert-R.C. Waters, Mrs. Guesie - Honorable Mention, Caleb Dornbusch-R.C. Waters, Miss. Krehmke - Honorable Mention, Mary Greggila-St. Boniface, Mrs. Brahier - 3rd Place, Jacob Crabtree-R.C. Waters, Mrs. Krieger - 2nd Place, Summer Magi -R.C. Waters, Mrs. Perkins - 1st Place, Zach Galford-R.C. Waters, Mrs. Perkins - Special Recognition.

The winners received a special certificate from the Tree Commission and donated food cards. Later in the day the students enjoyed cookies provided by Community Markets and were given a sapling gifted by the Soil and Water Conservation District, delivered by the Tree Commission members.

The members of the Tree Commission, Chairman Dennis Finke, K.C. Cousins, Thomas Hurrell, Harold McBee and Tom Sorg, would like to thank everyone connected with this event for their generosity and efforts, to make this a successful Arbor Day celebration.
