Fiery head-on crash claims Columbus man

AMBOY TWP. - A head on collision claimed the life of a Columbus man here on Thursday morning.

At about 7:50 a.m. a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid driven by Daniel J. Roberts, 45, of Columbus, went left of center on US 20 near Co. Rd. 4-3. Roberts' vehicle struck an eastbound commercial tractor trailer head-on.

Roberts was ejected from his vehicle; however, he was wearing a seatbelt, officials with the State Highway Patrol said. Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fulton County Coroner.

The commercial vehicle, a 2003 Kenworth, was operated by Ronald D. Baldwin, 42, of Ionia, Mich. After the truck was struck, it became engulfed in flames. Baldwin, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical University of Ohio, by air ambulance where he was listed in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
