Park school news
By JANE MYERS
Park Principal
As the weather turns cooler, we would like to remind students that Mrs. Trumbull will continue to allow recess time outside. Remember to have a jacket handy for those cooler days.
Park student council is up and running. Students were elected to represent their homeroom and will be electing officers soon. They have enjoyed being in charge of the daily announcements. One of their first tasks is to hold a fund raiser so that Park can help to sponsor an Honor Flight to Washington DC for our local veterans. Each school in the district has been challenged to raise $500 before Veteran's Day.
Fifth grade students have been enjoying science class this month. The students anticipate seeing Mr. Philippi in his lab coat. This means that there will be experiments in science. The past few days the students have been dissecting owl pellets. They had to take apart the pellets and classify the bone pieces to discover what the owl had been eating! Fifth graders have also begun helping in the cafeteria during lunch time. Many students have signed up for this opportunity to be a much appreciated working part of the Park community.
Fourth graders recently had the opportunity to attend the Fulton County Ag Fest. This hands-on event was sponsored by several local businesses and was held at the Fulton County Fair Grounds. Some of the activities the students participated in including rope making, observing a working blacksmith and going on a draft horse driven hay ride. Upon their return, the students have been busy writing thank you notes to the various sponsors. In Math the students have just started a unit on multiplication. Practice those facts at home!
The third graders have completed the Fall Ohio Achievement Test in reading. All students were fed a delicious breakfast on test day compliments of Superintendent Baz to help them gear up for the test. In addition, in the weeks prior to the test Mrs. Myers read a test vocabulary word during morning announcements. Classes then had an opportunity to discuss the word's meaning. One student from each class got to visit the office and if they could tell Mrs. Myers what the word meant, they received a small prize. Classes have also begun studying about their community and are preparing for a walk around town Oct. 23. Students and parents are reminded that homework each night includes reading for 20 minutes. October's Book-It project is an oral report.
Park will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair on October 14, 15 and 16. Informational fliers have been sent home. Students will have the opportunity to browse and purchase items that week. Feel free to stop by the library during regular school hours to check out the great selections.
Red Ribbon Week will be held the week of October 20. Many special activities have been planned. As we all pledge to be drug free, many special activities will be held including a poster contest, trivia questions and special clothing days.
Please remember that there is no school for students on Friday, Oct. 24. This is a teacher work day. Halloween parties will be held Friday, Oct. 31 and grade cards will be sent home on the 30th.
