Rotary Foundation awards scholarships

The Swanton Rotary Foundation has announced its 12 scholarship recipients for the Class of 2008. Six appeared in last week's Enterprise and the other six appear this week.

Sarah Hounshell

Sarah Hounshell is the daughter of Michael and Barbara Hounshell. She will attend Bluffton University to major in education.

She earned the Henry Hefner Memorial, a one year award of $600.

While at Swanton, she was a quiz team member and in band for four years, in chorus for three years, Spanish Club, Destination Imagination, NHS and a sixth grade camp counselor for two years and prom committee one year. In band she was a section leader and librarian for two years.

In the community, she was a volunteer at Swanton Public Library, a volunteer at Crestwood Elementary School, a Sunday School Helper at Crossroad Evangelical Church and in the youth group. She also was a World Community Workshop Member.

Hounshell's honors and awards include honor roll, Top Dog Award and perfect attendance for four years.

Kristen Smith

Kristen Smith is the daughter of Karen and Dan Smith. She will attend Adrian College to major in art therapy.

She earned the Richard and Mildred McQuade Memorial, a one year award of $500.

At Swanton, she has participated in basketball, soccer and track for four years and NHS for two years. She was a representative for NHS two years and was a captain in soccer and basketball.

In the community, she attended Buckeye Girls State, was a peer mediator, has been involved with activities through NHS, helped at Bittersweet Farms, volunteered at the Corn Festival and St. Richard's Festival, gathered food for the Swanton Food Bank, helped clean trails at Oak Openings Metropark, help repaint the football locker room and did make up for the musical.

Smith's honors include honor roll all four years, scholar athlete award for four years, several awards for soccer, including first team all-district and third team all-state, several awards for track including a school record and qualifying for the state meet in the 300 hurdles. She also received the Senior Athletic Award.

Justin Bezeau

Justin Bezeau is the son of Renee Bezeau and Donald Bezeau. He will attending the University of Toledo to major in civil engineering.

He earned the Richard and Mildred McQuade Memorial, a one year award of $500.

While at Swanton, Bezeau was involved in show choir and school plays for four years, was a peer mediator for one year and played football, wrestled and ran cross country and track. He served as captain of the football, wrestling and cross country teams.

In the community, he participated in Feed the Troops for one year. He also did a magazine drive at the high school.

Bezeau's honors and awards include honor roll and scholar athlete all four year, all-league and player of the year in football, the most desire award in wrestling and class rewards.

Gregory Vincent

Greg Vincent is the son of Paul and Tracy Vincent. He will be attending Adrian College to major in physical therapy.

He earned the one-year Swanton Rotary Scholarship worth $500.

While at Swanton, he was involved in football and NHS for four years, track and peer mediation for three years, yearbook and camp counselor for two years and football camp coach for one year. He was head peer mediator, football team captain, track team captain and lead director and producer for SHS media for two years and head camp counselor one year.

In the community, he helped repaint the varsity locker room, worked at the SHS blood drive and volunteered to help the STRS with their Corn Festival booth for three years.

Vincent's honors and awards include honor roll for three years, merit roll for one year and all-league awards in football and track.

Barbara Jimison

Barbara Jimison is the daughter of Todd and Patricia Jimison. She will attend the University of Findlay and major in communications.

She earned the Larry Avery Memorial, a one year award of $250.

While at Swanton, she was involved in the equestrian team for four years, yearbook for three years and soccer and basketball for one year each. She served as yearbook editor for one year.

In the community, she donated gifts and food to families at Christmas with her 4-H group, cleaned the grounds at Harry Hughes Youth Equestrian Center for four springs and participated in the Angel Tree. She served as 4-H secretary for one year.

Jimison's honors and awards include being on the honor roll 13 times, Rotary Student of the Month, Outstanding Tech Prep Senior, as well as teachers' and academic awards.

Jacob Gombash

Jacob Gombash is the son of William and Polly Gombash. He will attend Tri-State University to major in business.

He earned the a Swanton Rotary Foundation scholarship, a one-year award of $250.

While in school, he played football and was in the choir and show choir for four years, in the theater for three years, did track and baseball one year and was involved in 4-H for 10 years. Gombash served as 4-H club treasurer for six years, president one year and vice president one year.

In the community he volunteered at works nights for the Junior and Senior fair boards, did road side trash pick-up in Fulton Township, did pop can recycling for 4-H club, assisted younger 4-H members with animals at the fair, helped at a Jr. Fair Board food stand, taught and coached young football players and helped at Quality Assurance for Fulton County 4-H animal project members. He was supervisor of Quality Assurance for one year.

Gombash's honors and awards include all-league honorable mention in football, lineman of the year and a teacher's award.
