At the Friday night football game, the Wellington Dukes hammered the winless Brookside Cardinals 47-0. Brookside hasn't won a game since last year's defeat of the Dukes. The Dukes were determined not to let that happen again -- and they didn't.
Wellington dominated the gridiron with 559 yards from scrimmage and 461 yards on the ground. Steve Simonson had 147 yards on 8 carries, and Austen Gray had 158 yards on 19 carries. On the first possession, Wellington moved the ball well with Gray having a 20 yard run and the final run for a touchdown.
Brookside fumbled the next time they had the ball. Wellington couldn't move the ball and had to punt. Brookside also punted and Wellington took over on their 35-yard line. Wellington moved the ball well with Simonson having a 25-yard run and Gray scoring on a seven yard run early in the second quarter.
Wellington 's next possession included a 45-yard pass to Charlie Coleman and Jerry Herman scored on an 8-yard run. The score was then Wellington 20 - Brookside 0.
Brookside moved the ball well but a Coleman interception stopped the threat. Coleman returned the interception for 45 yards. Wellington scored on a 28-yard Simonson-to-Herman pass. The two point conversion was good and Wellington led the game 28-0. The half ended after a possession by each team.
On the third play of the second half Simonson scored on a 43-yard run. The PAT failed but Wellington was still leading the game 34-0. Brookside was unable to move the ball and punted. Gray went 41 yards in two carries and Herman scored on a 52 yard run.
Brookside could not move the ball and tried a fake on a fourth and 10 which failed and the Dukes took over on Brookside 's 44. Neither team could advance the ball. With Wellington taking over on their 38-yard line and good runs by Gray, Matt Ramage, and John Bowman, the Dukes scored the final touchdown with Bowman going in from the 4-yard line. The final reading on the score board was Wellington 47 - Brookside 0.
The story of the game could not be concluded without mentioning the Dukes' defense which played superbly. The standouts were Gray, Ramage, Jacob Schramm, and Matt Flynn.
This Friday is the final game of the season against Oberlin at home.
